My part time gig is as a concealed weapons instructor, and a 24 year combat infantry vet. Permit or no permit, get yourself some professional training!
Practice with your weapon (it's fun), dry fire, practice mag changes and drawing. The thing to remember is "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast". Far to many people think it's not hard to draw a weapon and take a shot that actually hits what they want to hit. This is not the movies where you can fire from the hip and hit every time.
The most common question I get is "What is it like?" The only way I can think of getting close is run about a quarter mile, then do some pushups. Now try to draw and hit your target, because that's what's going to happen, your heart rate will go straight up, your field of vision will narrow, and complex tasks become more difficult. This is why the Army does so much repetitive training, if you do something the same way, time after time, it will become muscle memory, and easier to do in a high stress environment. Once the two way rifle range starts, and you start hearing rounds go by, no matter how many times it's happened before, your heart rate will go up, but training can help you function and be able to deal with it.
Okay, I'm done with my rant, and if you've read this far, if nothing else become proficient with your weapon.
