Hi all, I am new to this forum but have posted on the cummins forum. I got a 98 24 valve with the hard start problem and need some help. The parts store charged me 17 dollars for the 11 dollar relay. I didn't get a socket with it, is it ok to attach the wires directly to the relay or do I need a socket. Can I just trace the yellow white wire back from the lift pump and cut it and attach to the relay. I have looked at the schematic that moparman provided. I see that pin 86 goes to ground and 85 ties in with the brown starter wire, can I trace the wire from the starter up and tie in anywhere? The yellow white wire must be cut and connected to pin 30 and 87a. Sorry to ask some stupid questions but it cost a lot to take it and have somebody else fix it. These are hard times for the working man.Thanks for any help! -
Thanks for the diagram on the lift pump kill relay for the hot hard start Michael! That's just what I was looking for! I'm assuming you're just using a normal, 12 volt relay? -Pin 85 on the relay you're just tapping into the starter solenoid wire?-Pin 86 on the relay is just to ground?-Pin 30 on the relay is the positive wire that would be going into the stock plug on the stock lift pump if I was using the stock pump? -
Ok I did the mod and it primes when you go key on but when cranking it you can see the test light flashing (not staying steady) and then when it starts it stays steady is this what i am looking for? i don't have gauge for fuel yet but the lift pump is from parts store new and only 1000 miles old so far. I can tell right off the batt something is different because it cranks and lights first hit of the key where as since installing new lift pump it would crank a few times and some times you had to try 5 or 6 times before it would start! I thank you guys very much for the modification its a life saver! Question now is I know its just a bandaid to my injection pump's problem, I have 155,000 miles on truck guessing same on injection pump what should I expect to go out next or how long? Should I be saving for new injection pump? Truck runs great now starts great just worried about injection pump now! Thanks in advance. CD
