EPA orders VW recall on Not So Clean Diesels

Ha Ha that pretty much describes 90% of the conversations on this site which I point out as such and then get the cold shoulder for or key board lashed quite often, so if I can't beat em I just join in. Damned if I do Damned if I don't.

Hope the Full throttle switches work out lol.

I will say this site WAY better than most forums I've seen as far as negativity and bashing goes. But it's inevitable no matter what site your on someone will think you're wrong. I'm not referring to any specific situations but it usually seems to be someone's ego getting in the way of the facts.

Wife took a road trip to Salt lake city Utah last month and she finally figured her mileage for the trip and it was awesome, I couldn't hardly believe it especially knowing how heavy my wifes foot is.

She was on her way west and filled up in miles city Montana where she reset and began checking, she made it all the way to salt lake city drove around there for a few days and then back filled up somewhere in Idaho. That tank did 51 mpg and that was through Yellowstone on the way down as well. Made it all the way home and then some on the second tank which figured out to be 56 mpg.:thud:

why would a 56 mile per gallon car need any smog? That's clean burning in my book.

I've always said the gov't just wants to  require new things for companies  to make thereby creating new economies/ company start ups for more tax revenue thru corporate tax and payroll taxes. It's all about the money.

Studies have shown a direct correlation between the amount of money flowing in the economy and the amount of waste and pollution at the other end

If they pass carbon credits bill it will only require more money to have to flow by driving up the cost on virtually everything.

Holy Fahrvergnügen! So what is that a good 10 mpg over stock?  Explain to me how dpf, scr, egr, and a little horse piss are "Green"

Try 12-16 mpg over best ever figured of 39 when stock. She never figures her mileage as  DDER but does it on long road trips because its my habit of doing it.

The 2014 Jetta was the last year before SCR so no horse piss was ever needed on this one.

This one got the Cat, DPF and EGR cooler deleted and the egr port blocked off but can't remember if it was the high or low pressure egr. the egr system is still mostly in tact yet that is a whole other bag of beans to  do on these things with a whole other set of parts to replace eliminate and modify.:ahhh:

Wife is a smiling girl today.

VW has sent out buy back options for the TDI diesels that where part of the big VW mess and her car is part of the deal.

They sent out a nice gesture a year ago already of a 500 dollar prepaid gift card and a 500 credit to be spent at the dealer which was nice. Then came the buy back campaign where they make different offers, total buyback offer for a set price depending on several factors or keep the car and do the recall emissions repair and get a partial refund or one can get a partial refund and not do the emissions repair. I did some number crunching and decided if we keep the car we could come out 2-4K better taking the partial refund price decline the emissions recall and if she wanted to sell car outright which she submitted and she got the offer back last night of a bit over 6K from VW which was the loan payoff amount when she submitted the app a couple months ago. She is very happy as am I, just fell into the deal real sweet to start with being it was a repairables car and we got it @ around 5k under book to start with and now this, She wants to possibly sell it now and use the win fall gain to get into a larger 4wd or awd rig now.

I have a 2012 Passat SEL TDI that I have been very happy with but I have chosen to sell back to VW. (More on that later)

I get 42 in town and 46-48 on the road with the current emission setup on this vehicle.  I have the DSG tranny and have enjoyed its performance.  VW is supposedly working on an emission fix but I never thought about doing the repair option as I don't believe we'll get a bump in reliability out of the various equipment and operating conditions that will be modified in order to fix the emissions problem.  I also believe the vehicle economy will go down with any emission mods that VW has to make.

I have thought about taking the buyout and then purchasing a new TDI that I assumed would actually be designed around operating under the current diesel emission criteria.  But alas VW is not offering any TDIs in the US for the next several years and they may not ever offer them again in the US.

I thought VW would surely offer a special deal to the TDI owners to buy a new VW and try to keep potentially 500K TDI owners  in the family rather than making it easy for these owners to just take their buyout money and go to some other brand.  But they have yet to do that as well.

So I have come to the conclusion that I will take the buyout and use the money to buy some other brand.  I am getting $20.5k for my vehicle and $6.2k for lost value etc., as a bonus.  So it's not hard to see why I'm taking my nearly $27k buyout across the street to another brand.

Bill, when I submitted all my paperwork with the application for buyout, VW asked if the car was wrecked and had a salvage title.  Don't really know why but assumed it would impact the buyout and or bonus payout.  Of course they have the ability to verify what is reported in the paperwork.  Also it was my understanding that there was no payout if the owner made the choice to keep their vehicle and not have it modded for the emission performance.  In otherwords, money is only paid out if you get the emission mod or you sell the car back to VW.  If you keep the car and do nothing then no money is exchanged.

I wish you good luck with your decision and hope it works out the way you want.

Have to update, I have been out of the loop for a bit luckily the wife had not mailed in the acceptance offer. I had not read it since she started it and you are correct they only offer buy out with an emissions update. i told her to stop and refile to try for a buy back offer now instead, having to do the emissions update in order to receive payment just killed that deal for us.

Why can't they just give a warning to get the new vehicles corrected or else?

Instead all these fines and buy backs, eventually will be paid for by the consumer anyway, besides the Mileage losses.

It's high time the Gov't went thru a recession. I went thru 3 horrible recessions and they don't do anything except run up more debt.

True. I'll agree that NOis why the efficiency is down. Again there is never anything said about NOx in the media. But the biggest hype on the media is carbon. NOx has been a issue since the early 70's if you want to go back to when EGR system started that I can remember. Yeah I know the EPA has it standards but why is all the hype happening? Media... VW getting their hand slapped. Unknown if its a CO2, NOx or particulate matter when the whole VW thing came to be.

Reality is that every emission is equated to CO2 and it is ridiculous!

CO2 As stated earlier can be turned back to O2 with the carbon content left in plants.

Other emissions cannot.

I have done a lot of studying on sustainable technologies and there is no substitute for efficiency.

An aeronautical engineer I spoke with agreed that fuel has an emission value and you cannot reduce that total.

However, if you make that same quantity go two times as far you get half the emissions overall!

CO2 equation

298 x – nitrous oxide (N2O) – I.e. Releasing 1 kg of N2O into the atmosphere is about equivalent to releasing 298 kg of  CO2

Totally agree. Better the efficiency the better the emissions will be. So all these devices like EGR, DPF, etc. All add fuel consumption. The problem is the big Govt wants inefficient vehicles that way they can make more tax dollars on fuel sales. This is why true hybrid vehicles are illegal to be sold in the USA.

Wife is getting closer to being without her TDI, VW requested her loan and account info directly from the bank a few days ago so prolly just a matter of time before she has to turn it in. She is in new vehicle shopping mode now and leaning towards an AWD SUV or Cross over of some sort. She has not driven anything yet but just from drive bys and web searching and looking at specs and mileage she keeps coming back to the new 2017 Nissan Rogue. She is super sad about giving up the fuel economy but having had a car that does 40+ for near 20 years has gotten her spoiled but she wants something more comfy now with more room to haul stuff.

I wouldn't worry about the EPA much longer....

I hope you are right, but I am not optimistic.  Politics, money, and power... Obama had a super majority his first two years and all he managed as a legacy was deadlock and a failed attempt at socialized healthcare.

Thats because socialism isnt something you can "shove" on a society.  Rather it has to be dished out in such a manner whereby society believes that its for their best interest and/or quietly done behind the scenes otherwise society will revolt and have nothing to do with those very policies which are taking their freedom and prosperity.

That said, liberalism is nothing but entry level socialism, and for Obamacare and all other crappy liberal EPA type actions and taxes to get implemented it has to be pushed upon us using scare tactics and straight up bull crap lies otherwise people would vote against it.  That takes time.....and something done over a generation, not a couple years.

Take highway taxes, school taxes, social service taxes (fire/police).....etc.  How many times have we gone to the polls to vote on such social tax increases because the proposed bill promises our roadways will be better and our schools will be grander and we'll be safer with better police protection and fire crews.  But.....yet those tax monies rarely ever make it to their promised destination.  Although every election cycle we're seemingly voting in more and more of the same ol' taxes totally overlooking the fact that we're already dishing out massive amounts of our hard earned money for those same taxes we voted in last election cycle.

I've learned as I grow older that the biggest problem with humanity is we have a problem with short term memory loss.  And since schools are no longer teaching accurate history.....it seems were doomed to repeat. :smart:
