DAP looks OK. Next question: I'm running a FASS direct replacement lift pump. I understand I need a better lift pump. I don't want to re-plumb the whole fuel system. I will If I have to, but this is just a truck, daily driver, and tows my race car and camper. Any recommendations?

You are trying to msintain 14psi as the lowest pressure with foot stuck in it. Some occasional dips under that does not seem to hurt many folks that are running close to a stock truck. Which pump will give you that on stock fuel lines is bit of mystery. A fuel pressure gauge will be your best freind to keep an eye on it. I would put one in first and see where stand with the pump that you have. It might already meet the standard. But without one you will never know whats happening with the one you have.

That is weak and who knows what pressure if any you had at VP failure.The VP will pull fuel if the lift pump fails until it grinds itself a apart.  I would recommend fixing that so you can see if the lift pump is still is working. Another good thing to do is run some 2 stroke oil in your fuel, about 1 oz per gallon, TCW3 ashless. I as many others run the Wal Mart super tech. It is very good for the VP as is bio diesel.

We have several folks of late with high mileage oe VPs. Mine only lasted 75k on the stock truck as several others here. Seems hit miss on the longevity of the oe pumps.

So far the 5-speed has held up, too. I was told not long after I bought the truck that the 5-speed would fail. I'm easy on it. I always downshift into 4th when I'm pulling a hill. And, the heaviest load I've towed with it was when I moved out of AK. Had 1500 lbs of car parts in the back and a car trailer with my race car on it behind.

Ditch the DDRP lift pump asap.  I had one that only lasted 20k or so.  Fuel pressure gauge saved my VP.  I also used to have a glowshift gauge that went through sending units all the time, even with needle valve and snubber.  

 

Replumbing the fuel system is not that bad at all.  I used the kit from Vulcan and it was super easy.  Mounting the new LP on the frame and doing the wiring was a piece of cake.  So easy that I did all this at a campground in the dark.

You will have to set me straight here.  I have a 20 foot tilt-deck trailer rated at 14,000 lbs GVWR.  It's empty weight is about 3,000 lbs (maybe 3,500 lbs max).  Are you saying your trailer weights 7,000 lbs empty?

I got my ruck at 44,000 miles with the first blown VP-44. Second one went out around 73,000 miles

 

My advice is if your staying close to stock or under 400 hp, your best bet is to buy a FASS95, and run 1/2" lines from the tank to the Fass pump, then run he 3/8's line they give you from the fass to the Vp-44. I see a very consistent fuel pressure. I'm also running a fass 150 spring that's trimmed for me, so i see 18 at idle and 17 under load.

 

All of my fuel hose is marine grade with the steel banding inside of it. it works great, Don't forget to add crinkle tube to it for protection!

 

I've bought a bunch of pumps through DAP over he years and haven't had any issues

Crazy seeing people ok with a Vp-44 failing at sub 300k miles. We have highway engines that go for 1 million miles no problem, injection pump gets rebuilt at that point, and yet it is ok for VP-44 to only get 150k to 200k miles at most? My 95 12V keeps going at 445k with no problems. I can run black sludge through it and it runs all day pulling the backhoe at 35k pounds total! I hop in my 2001 at 300k miles for a trip to the feed store and I get my second P0216! Even with 20 PSI at the VP-44. Son of A! 

 

Call me crazy, but this design is the worst I've ever seen in my short 47 years of working on diesels..........
