Most likely wet filter element.  With as much as I have my hood open when its raining I think the few extra dollars is worth the protection some mesh can provide against the filter entering my engine.

If the seals are good and your vents ran up high enough should have no issues with water getting into differentials or elsewhere. When I had my toy truck I would drive through water where my *** would be sitting in water, roughly six feet off the ground, never had issues with water getting into my oil. I did grease my U-joints and King pins religiously though.

That's a big "if". Seals in general, only seal one way. Some may have a small dust lip but it wont keep out water. When you keep a vehicle a long time and drive it as many miles as Mike and I do, water contamination will rear it's ugly head. Maybe not today, tomorrow or next week, but trust me, it will show up. Ball joints, unit bearings and tie rods to name a few, not counting axles, u-joints and t-case.

 

The water crossing in the picture looked deep enough to even submerge the starter/solenoid. A warm component seems to create a vacuum when they encounter an instant cold water bath.
