Spindle Nut Torque Specs

Recommended Posts

What happens if you only torque it to 250 or even 200. I believe that spindle and the nut actually keep the bearing from coming apart, but I have used a 20-ton press to try and get it apart and all I did was bent half inch brackets I made to support the bearing, never did get them separated, I think 50 ton may do it

If you go under spec, you don't pre-load the bearings correctly.  And tapered roller bearings usually use barrel shaped rollers in the races, so it's important to correctly preload the bearing so the load is carried squarely by the face of the roller.  Otherwise the load is carried off-center and wears quicker.

Are we talking seal unit bearing type or cone and race bearings?

I think I do remember it only calling about 220 ft.lbs when I put the freespin kit on with the individual replaceable cone bearings...not the unit bearings.

I apologize, I seen 2wd when first read the post, but later was thinking when I did mine I thought it was 180, we'll @dave110 showes that on the 4x4 and @IBMobile is showing 280 for 2wd, so for this application 280 is the right number. Sorry for bringing this up, I got cornfused. That's nuts though 280 on a 2wd and 180 on 4x4, almost doesn't make sense.
