Oil from breather tube

Recommended Posts

My 98.5 24V has a hose that comes down and ends up near the front pinion yoke. I did not like the slight drip from my diff pinion area. I thought it was the pinion seal. I changed the seal and cleaned everything up. Then I extended the hose slightly longer so now the drip comes off lower down past everything. Straight to the ground. About a small spot about the size of a quarter drips out after each drive. It does not ammount to much. Just an annoyance on my driveway. I get out there with some heavy duty degreaser, a scrub brush and a hose every few months and clean up the spots. My diff and pinion are staying clean too now!

Just look what the big boys leave behind at a fuel station what you see is normal.  I knew something was afoot when I had more than one drop not by the tube, how I found out my front main seal is weeping.  On the tube though does anyone notice how it seems to get worse come summer time not much but noticeable?  Wondering if heat and condensation play a role in making the drips larger than if it was just oil because I will admit that I felt the fluid on the ground and it did seem thinner than straight oil.

Actually it will get worse if you crank up timing excessive or in the winter time with a canned tune like Edge. This is because as IAT falls below 80°F it cranks up nearly 4° of timing advancement. Then add high cetane fuel will add to the problem in the winter. Typically gets better in the summer.

Gets even worse vacuum leaks

The two times over the life of my truck that I noticed the breather tube was messier and leaked more oil than normal, I had a vacuum leak.  Neither time was the vacuum leak large enough to noticeably affect vacuum operated controls, but the excessive air flow showed up through the breather and added to the mess.

Each time I repaired the vacuum leak the breather began venting normally again.
