5.9 trans problem

If you have an 01 you are experiencing a very common problem. The truck locks and unlocks at will. There is no consensus for how to fix this. There are a lot of things to try: Clean your battery cables and make sure their tight. New VP. New APPS. Put tin foil around one of the alternator wires. And the one I endorse is to add a line filter http://www.dttdiesel.com/product-p/kw5535.htm Also read this: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/electrical-q-47re-hunting-gears-t110002.html

The first thing I would try is following what is in this article: http://articles.mopar1973man.com/2nd-generation-24v-dodge-cummins/28-transmission-systems/260-torque-converter-lock-unlock-issues Instead of paying $80+ for a 'filter', why couldn't a person go to Radio Shack (or equivalent) and get a diode to install right off the alternator? I am sure it would be much cheaper.

You would buy a new alternator first? Why? This is such a common problem. Most people with a 24v and an auto trans get to it sooner or later. I fixed mine with a $20 line filter from BD. It is not a filter for the alternator either. http://www.dieselperformance.com/index.php/product/index/185P I posted a link with multiple fixes. It clearly states there isn't a one fix cure all. It also tells you how to build your own. That being said both of my 01's were fixed with the BD line filter. If it ever happens now it is because a battery terminal is loose or dirty. ATS has a rewire diagram to fix it also. All of this information is online. It won't take much digging to find it. Search for: 47re lock/unlock.

I'm not sure what you mean. The scan tool shows two TPS doing two different things. The one that goes from 0-100 acts normal but the other one is never the same. Sometimes its close to the 1st one but its never showing the same readout

Also I tried the MoparMan fix by pulling the alternator fuse and driving it to see if it changed. It didnt change anything.

If you look at the DTT filter link posted it shows the filter is $80. I never said to buy an alternator. I said to test the alternator output the way the article states. I speculated that the diode would be a lot less expensive than $80. Chances are the filter you got from BD is just a smaller diode that bleeds off the one part of the voltage that makes it an AC voltage. A diode off the alternator would ensure the entire truck see a clean DC voltage.

I thought I saw somewhere in this thread we are talking about an "02"? As for 2nd gens I can assure you that the "TQC" lock, unlock issue is unmistakeable... Your truck will seem as if it is continuously shifting up and down above say.. 45mph,.. and it will continue loaded, or unloaded at least to 75-80 mph or faster at least in my experience anyways. Its not subtle, and it will drive you freakin nuts in short order.Sounds like you might have a little different issue to me?? hope this helps

Ok so SitRep. I think I fixed the problem. I saw some videos of people recalibrating the TPS on their newer trucks by unhooking the battery for at least 30 minutes then hooking it back up turning the ignition on slowly depressing the throttle all the way down and then let it up slowly. Whether the problem is fixed or just covered up for I dont know. But I have tested it in every way I can think. Ive let it bog down in OD at 40mph and had it all the way up to 80 and not a single miss, slip, or blip in the RPM's. So something to look into before going into the crazy cures and super expensive repairs.

If that fixed the problem then your apps is going bad or you had a loose battery cable. Running the truck with the multi meter would have shown this also. Sometimes the reset works for a long time and sometimes you have to reset it a lot. I kept a 1/2 wrench in my door because it happened so many times.
