Teardown and Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Haha my reaction was terrible! First time I'd ever been to the track though.

No boosted launch....4wd @ 2500rpm then let out on the clutch hard for the left one. 18-1900 on the right one.

2wd didn't turn out so well.....

So my fun at the track came at an expense.... I had shoved a smaller hose inside my breather tube so that I could route it a different way, and that smaller hose was way too small.
It blew out the tappet cover seal, and finally finished itself off today. I came out of a store to BIG puddles on the ground , and the whole underside was coated in oil. I filled it up and got home asap. It leaked about a quart in 20 miles....
So I spent my night fixing that. It's always something!
I got a longer hose for the tappet cover breather and opened back up the front cover breather.

It was sad to see so much oil on an otherwise spotless engine and transmission!! It's still covered today.... back to the car wash.

There will be days you will think, as soon as I got it back together that last time... I should have put it on eBay!  But, it will be worth it.  You gained a lot of experience through this project that will help you professionally as well.  Not many guys in your line of work who can get their hands dirty with any machine.

You have been through a ringer lately especially getting hit with $3,000 in damage. Your truck still looks and runs better than the other 90% on the road. I have an off the wall question, When you think back to when your truck was stock or close to stock and heading down the interstate on a long trip. What speeds could you safely maintain before EGTs or other temperatures started to kick in the warnings to slow down? I'm not saying you run up and down the road breaking the speed limits I'm just asking when at times you might be above the speed limits how well can you cruise with the rebuild compared to when stock? whenever the cruise is on, what speed do you have to back off when the EGTs start to go past 1250* and what top speed can you maintain for long periods without causing issues to pop up? Did the great rebuild you did make a difference on how you cruise from state to state?            I know this question might not make much sense and if it doesn't let me know and I will try to put it another way. I have certainly enjoyed reading your adventure and rebuild.

I'm not sure if I really understand your questions.... but I'll try. If I'm way off just ask in a different way and I'll do my best.

So cruising stock loaded / unloaded 90mph or 60mph the egts were low. Even wit the smarty I could not top 1200deg no matter what I did. So to answer your first question I could maintain really any speed I wanted.

Now with all of the goodies I have I can still cruise at any speed and not have to worry about temps. Even accelerating from 0-100 with the smarty at WOT I can't break 1200deg, but it gets there MUCH faster than stock.

With the TST on is a completely different story. But what I feel is safe for the truck is cruising about 85. The engine can take much faster / higher rpms, but the suspention and steering systems I feel aren't safe much faster than that.

The rebuild hasn't changed much speed wise, it just gives the truck more power through the rpm range.

I appreciate you reading in between the lines. Kind of a screwed up question anyways. Your answer covered it all. I was curious if you could set the cruise on what ever you wanted and not be concerned with higher than normal temperatures from a stock perspective and a modified perspective. With your tear down and rebuild I thought it would be a perfect question to satisfy my curiosity since you have been there and done that with this post. Thanks for the reply.

If you don't mind my asking, what's a good deal?

Well the kit made of stainless is 1700, then the intake horn is 250, then the alternator bracket and thermostat housing are more, so it's probably around 2100+ with shipping.

I picked it up for 1300 shipped.

Vais, I'm going to keep the one in my signature.

Ok I had to change the viewing version because I am on my cell phone. That turbo will be perfect with a S475 as your low pressure turbo. The trick is to appropriately size the turbine housing for the low pressure S475. Do you have one currently or are you still hunting for one?
