My cruise control light was always staying on, but the fly-by-wire cruise didn't work. After much problem solving, I finally took the 2001.5 Ram 2500 6 speed diesel to the dealer. Trust me, it wasn't my first choice. Anyway, they told me that the PCM didn't know that I ever had a cruise control equipped truck. The tech claimed that part of the PCM hard drive was dead. The dealership ordered a PCM, but somewhere along the line there was a mistake and they received a PCM for an automatic transmission. They didn't install it. Instead, I ordered a PCM from NAPA for about $450. The PCM came in and the dealership agreed to install it, labor free, since they'd screwed up so many times previously. So, they installed it. Then I got a call saying they still couldn't get the cruise to respond and had determined it was the instrument cluster. Cha-ching! The dealership tells me they can get a new cluster for $790 plus core deposit. I decided I'd buy from O'Reilly who wanted $330 plus core deposit. Well, it was supposed to take a month to get the part from O'Reilly. Nope. A month later they can't get the part, and they tell me that they might be able to get it if I wait another 4 months. So, I gave up and told the dealership to order their $790 dollar part. Three days later (yesterday) they get the part and try to install it. Tech calls me up, "The part that came in is Canadian, and I can't install a Canadian cluster into your Dodge." I assume it was due to KMH instead of MPH. Anyway, I've had it at this point, so I told the guy I just wanted my truck back, and that I will never be back. Guy ordered (or coincidentally received) the wrong PCM AND the wrong cluster. He seems entirely incompetent. After 3 months and almost $1000 nothing has changed on my truck, the cruise light is still on (always) and doesn't work! In case you're wondering, the cluster does not throw any codes when tested. I wish I wasn't so dense in this area. Can the cluster really be the issue? Can I get one from a junkyard? Should I keep trying to find a new one somewhere, or can someone just fix the one that I have? Should I put pressure on the dealership to get back some of the money I squandered with them? Thanks for all of the advice!

I originally was going to start this thread asking for help, but I seem to have fixed the issues inadvertently. Here is the issues. My cruise control had been acting up of late. At first the cruise would act like it was backing off and then re accelerating. Very much like lightly lifting the throttle and easing it back on. Seemed to be doing it after about an hour of it being turned on. As time passed it got much worse and was actually cutting out in in harshly. So much so I just shut it off. Then out of the blue it would work just fine. The throttle itself worked fine thru all of this. Also during this time the idle up feature when releasing the clutch seemed to not function and I was choking the engine out like a freaking rookie first time stick driver. This to was kind off hit and miss as to when it would happen. One thing that I had noticed prior to these issues showing up was the negative cable end on the passenger battery was cracked on one side where the bolt passes thru. The connection was tight and I could not move it. I figured it was fine for a while until I could fix it. I went home last weekend and still had the issues, but figured it was at least time to fix the cable end. It was still tight and clean(used motor oil works great for that, thanks Mikey). So I took the cable off and sawed off the offending end. Replaced the clamp with a military style clamp and soldered new ends on the battery cable and the 2 ground wires that were also present at the cable end. I made my return trip last Sunday and no issues with the cruise and so far no issue with the idle up feature. I didn't have a wiring diagram to tell me what the grounds controlled, but so far that seems to have fixed the problem.

What's with my cruise control?
volkswagon posted a topic in 2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain
My cruise started acting up a while ago. I would set it but it seemed like it wasn't working but if I hit accel a bunch of times it would start to hold. After a while it didn't work at all and when I had time to look at it I found a broken vac line. I fixed that and now I set it and it just pulls it to WOT Any ideas for me? And could someone explain how the thing works? -
i was checking thru some old threads looking to see if anyone had dealt with the problem i am having. i saw a thread that smokey posted to about his cruise back in august. so if your are out there smokey let me know how you fixed it. my cruise light is lit whenever the truck is on and none of the controls function. the controls all seem to be working mechanicaly(easy to push and you canffeel the swithces operating as they have for the past 9 years). i replaced the clockspring while trying to diagnose other problems i had in the past. i even went back and reverse the wires to the controls just in case i had them backwards. no change. the only code i have is P500 and from what i have read today i am not going to sweat that since i spun my rear tires a couple of times the other day. everythig else seems to be working porperly except the cruise. are you out there smokey?

I tried using my cruise control on my way home from work tonight and it set a about 90 km/h. Nothing faster but I could use the accel button to speed it up. Played with it some more and then it wouldn't do anything. The odometer readout showed that it would turn on and off. In the morning I was pulling a trailer so I didn't try it then so I can't remember when the last time I used it. Any ideas?

Just got home from a 3700 mile vacation with my 05 and It has an annoying issue with the cruise control that I have never noticed before. It will out of the blue just kick out. no rhyme or reason. sometimes it will go almost an entire day and only do it once and the next day it will kick out evey 10 miles and then just come out of it. It doesn't turn off or loose memory it just cancels like i stepped on the brake. if I hit resume its back to normal. Brake pedal is up all the way and the p-brake pedal is up also as I checked that the first time it happened. It is so extremelly intermittANT that it would be a hard one to figure out I think. Road conditions and temp did not seem to be a factor. Anyone ever run into this issue?
