  1. Emergency Brake / Parking Brake Adjustment This procedure is for rear disc brake trucks. 2001.5+ model years. First block the front tires so the truck can't roll. Then jack up the rear axle of the truck till the tires are off the ground. Use jack stand under the rear axle. Don't set the brake! SAFETY FIRST! Now crawl under truck. The picture shown here is the driver side axle hub. There will be a notch in the bracket and in the notch is a rubber plug. You'll need a pair of needle nose pliers to reach in and pull the plug out. Now take a flashlight and look in the notch and you'll see a star wheel. You need to use a flat blade screwdriver to turn the star wheel. Check the wheel for drag by turning. If the shoes start to drag back it off a click or two. Then double check to see if it dragging again. Now do the other side the same way. Replace the rubber plugs. Now your done. Which direction to turn the star wheel to tighten? That's a simple answer. In the picture above you would want to be turning the star wheel downward away from the axle to tighten the brakes up. so basically this holds true for both sides. So the passenger side you would want to turn it down and away from the axle. If you reverse this you'll loosen the shoes up. Remember to check for rolling slack they shouldn't drag at all! Here is a few more pics so you can understand the setup better.
  2. All Yesterday my parking brake cable failed me. The cable itself did not break, but the metal 'clip' or whatever its called that holds the cable from the tensioner to the cable going forward did. I called my local dealership to get the intermediate cable ordered since it comes with the metal piece I need, however they said it is a discontinued part. After shopping around a few online websites for the part I have not come up with any luck either (Part # 52010321AA). The diagram below is pointing directly at the part I need on # 10. I am hesitant to buy an aftermarket cable again since this part failed me in less than a year already. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations on how to fix this so it does not happen again?
  3. I bought a 1999 2500 / Cummins 5.9, Quad Cab, 8' bed recently with a few issues. I got the engine running and replaced all the brakes (Rotors & Pad up front, Drums, Shoes, & Wheel cyls in the back). The parking brake didn't work when I bought the truck and it still does not work. * I have checked and double checked both rear brakes for assembly errors and found none. * I performed the rear drum brake adjustment with the parking brake cable very loose * I have tried to follow the cable adjustment procedure in the 1998 & 2001 factory service manuals but they really don't make sense. The procedures are essentially the same in the two manuals. Both say; Mark the tensioner rod 1/4" from the edge of the tensioner, tighten the adjusting nut until - (2001) the mark is no longer visible or (1998) the mark moves into alignment with the tensioner bracket. The relative position of the mark on the tensioner rod to the tensioner or tensioner bracket does not change. Also, the manual is very clear that this is a one time adjustment only, it should never be used to adjust the parking brake to compensate for wear. I purchased a Dorman brake cable adjuster (shortener) but the cables in this truck appear to be approximately 2 inches to long (longer than the Dorman adjuster can compensate for). With the OEM tensioner nut tightened all the way the park brake pedal goes all the way to the floor without applying the parking brake. I've removed the parking brake pedal assembly but can see no problem. I suspect that a previous owner may have installed a wrong cable. Is there a listing of the correct length cables for the front, intermediate, rear right, and rear left parking brake cables? Can anyone explain the correct procedure to adjust the cables following a brake job? I have attached a file showing the 1998 & 2001 adjustment procedures. Thanks! Park brake adjustment.pdf
  4. So I am attempting to get my parking brake to work and it seems like it is assembled wrong. It is a 2500 with a cummins, but the engine shouldn't matter. This is the splice for the front to the right rear cable this is the adjuster which seems to be wrong, I cannot see how ti can work this way. here is why I cannot see it work, it is attached to the right rear cable housing and seems to have no action... So it seems to me that the adjuster should be attached to the splice rather than to the cable housing, however, I am unsure as to what it really should look like. I would appreciate a pic of a good working cable and adjuster from a 2500. Thank you, ED

Hey, I have a 2nd gen and the driver side e-brake Return spring has been worn from not being attached within the drum.Just got off the phone with Dodge and they say they do not make this part and the parts store says the part is dealer only.What is it actually called and what is the part number?Where can I get one?

Help ......ok heres whats going on need to fix my parking brake and fast have a vehicle safety inspection comeing up on next thursday ......gotta have a working parking brake .....i remember reading somewhere ..sometime that the stock parking brake was very weak at best on these trucks ....there was a way to make them stronger had something to do with turning the big spring in an opposite direction and welding a bolt in somewhere ..or something like that .....any one have any info on this? .....also any one have any helpful hints on installing a new raptor lift pump i just got mine in the mail today with the new 1/2 inch lines with quick connect fittings....thanks in advance folks.
