So my gal has a bad leak coming from the power steering pump. Trying to figure out if the seals are available seperately or will I have to purchase the entire thing? And is there a diagram or schematic available some where online that will help us determine which parts we'll need if we can buy seperately? Thanks!

hey guys, i got a problem. late last week my power steering barfed up all the fluid all at once and had no power steering. after crawling under the truck, the only place i can find fluid is on the front of the gear box. all the hoses and lines seem dry. the hoses are in the factory slit-loom and none of the loom has fluid in them. it didn't barf it from the connection on the gear box as far as i can tell and the area around and below the pump are dry also. i looks as if it all came out from around the circle in the front of the gear box (but i don't see any holes, just fluid). i'm about to pull it later tonight, but is there anything i might be overlooking? any suggestion or thoughts are welcome. thx in advance

Power steering/Brake booster issues
fire176969 posted a topic in 2nd Generation Dodge Non-Powertrain
I recently had to replace my steering box due to a broken output shaft. Put a upgraded Borgeson steering box on the truck that I got used for a good price. Worked fine on the truck it came off of. Ever since the brake pedal has been really hard to push initially, then when it gets past the hard spot in the pedal, the brakes seem to almost lock up and toss you into the dash. The steering assist is almost non existant at idle. The assist goes away completely when using the brakes. Steering acts completely normal driving down the road but the brake problem is still present. Just installed a new Borgeson power steering pump on to replace the old one per their recommendation. No air in the system, currently waiting on a return e-mail/phone call from Borgeson and thought I would see if anyone else has ran into this issue before. -
I noticed a little growl out of my power steering pump today. Checked the fluid and it was low and added some to it quit the little growl I was hearing. I have also noticed it growl a little on start up in the cold part of the winter. It always went away after warm up. How do you check the pump to see if it is going bad? I have also noticed some oil driping from that area and was thinking the seals are going bad. When I get home I am replacing the tappet cover gasket and will have that side of the engine pretty clear. Since I am going to be in there that deep I would not mind doing what ever I need to wile I have it apart.I have seen mentioned here before about a rebuild kit for the seals. Can yall remind me of where that can be obtained?

I am new to Dodge diesels. I have a 2000 model and when you start up at below freezing, there is a howl like a banshee coming from under the hood. It changes sound when you either turn the steering wheel or step on the brakes????? Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on??? After 15 minutes driving, it gets to be less of a racket but as long as its below freezing, it continues. Oh, and the temperature guage never shows over about 130 degrees. I have a new 190 degree thermostat to install when it warms up outside.

Too much New Year celebration?? Ok really, what a way to start the first Monday in 2010! Now I need some feedback. Here's what happened...Weather temps dropping this week so I moved my 2001 Dodge 3500 diesel close to the garage so I could plug in the heater last night. My truck has always had some power steering issues since day 1 (bought it used in '01 with less than 5000 miles) but nothing that I could pin point at that time. With age, I've noticed when she's cold, the power steering is not smooth and tends to growl at times unless you're accelerating (thank goodness for standard transmissions). Well last night, I cranked her and moved her about 10 feet and killed it. Plugged in the heater, did a quick check on the drive way for any fluids and there it was... power steering fluid hitting the ground. It was literally bubbling out of the canister. Hubby opened the canister and the whole thing was frothy. Naturally that meant putting fluid into it before driving off to work this morning. So what's going on with my girl?

I lost my power steering and brakes. I left it set for a couple days started it up and let it run for about a half hour and got them back, but had a loud noise coming from the pump when I turned our hit the brakes. I had read in a couple places to change the fluid, started to do this and noticed the fluid was all foamy. I changed the fluid and it took for ever to get power steering and brakes. Drove it this morning and lost it again, went to check fluid and seen it was coming out the fill cap, opened it up and it was all foamy again. What do I need to do?

I bought my '99 Dodge diesel Ram 2500 new in October '99 and now have about 212,000 miles. The power steering has always been fine but lately has faded out while trying to park or making rapid turns in opposite directions. It doesn't seem to do this when the engine and power steering system is cold. I drive 30 miles to work and it will sometimes do it while parking at the office. At times it only acts up for a moment but at other times the steering stays difficult until the truck is parked and the engine turned off. During all of this the power brakes seem to be OK. The power steering fluid got low a couple of months ago but I simply refilled the pump. A leak was never found and the fluid level has stayed up since I refilled it. Any ideas? Thanks. ------- Jim
