Buddy of mine has a 1999 2500 4x4 (I assume 1999 on the plate on the door says mfg date is 7/99).He was driving his truck working just fine, then it died suddenly at 70, now it will start runs real ruff, barley idles, and there is no response from the throttle (aka dead pedal). The check engine light is on, however the ignition key on/off 3 times does not display codes via the odometer, it does on my 2002 2500.My question does the 1999 display trouble codes via the odometer (digging on the internet some say it should some say it will not)?2nd any ideas / hints might be wrong with the truck ?I know codes are needed otherwise just chasing our tails but thought someone might have some initial thoughts. Truck is not drivable so going to say autozone to pull codes is out. Going to try and pick up a inexpensive code reader. Thanks in advance, Tony

Pulled the 5'er 50 miles to the lake. When I arrived, the idle was very rough and arhythmic. I mean this thing sounded like a 50 yr old gas burner that had never seen new plugs and contacts. The next day everything was fine. VP44? Eric

:banghead::cry:1998.5, 5.9, 24 Valve, 2500 Dodge P/U with 190,000 milesInstalled fuel pressure gauge, Air dog filter and pump, along with a new VP44 from RPM Diesel in Fort Lauderdale, FL. at about 183,000. Today it cranked up and ran fine until I got to work backed up and put in park. Thats when I noticed the rough idle. When I got off work it started and idled fine, ran with no loss of power all the way home at 12 PSI. At the first light off the interstate it idled fine but when I got home it started to idle rough, and then when I put it in park it became noticeably worse but revved in park and accelerated fine when put in drive. Tonight I changed the filter on the Air Dog and checked for any noticable leaks but found none. After, I cranked it up and cracked each injector to see which one would make it get worse or not change. Unfortunately, all of the seemed to show evidence that its not the injectors. Please Please Please help, I have come to realize that there is not one good cummins diesel mechanic down here and I don't have enough vaseline to go to a dealer. Forgot, it didn't throw any codes either.

I have a 98 24 valve.. Just put a new fuel filter,v44 and fuel pump in the tank carried it to the local dealer...the work was done about 1000 miles ago... Since that time i have noticed it ideling a little ruff sorta of like a plug wire sparking off.. even though it doesnt have wires or plugs.... at times it runs smoth as always seems like it happens more when it's raining i can't get it to show any error codes.....the truck is stock except for the silencer ring and straight exhaust pipe... can any opne shed some light on what could be wrong????
