I have a 1998.5 3500 5.9 Vin 6 24v CTD, have put in a remain VP44 from O'Reillys, a new lift pump that puts about about 16 psi WOT, DAP 100HP injectors, and have done a block test and still cannot manage to figure out why i have white smoke at WOT. It blows a puff of white on a cold morning but after reaching OT my programmer kicks on and it'll be black for a while then it seems as if randomly it'll turn white, then if i turn my programmer off it still smokes white. I have no idea from here. Any ideas?

hey yall need some help here. Had to replace my injectors due to multiple bad injectors (shop did return flow test). Ordered injectors from diesel care and when I installed them the truck idled fine for about 5 minutes then i pulled out of drive and gave it a little bit of gas and heard a ting sound and truck started dumping white smoke with rough idle. Got back in garage, figured injector wasnt seated properly and pulled all injectors and tubes. One of them had a clean tip so i figured that was the injector that unseated. reinstalled everything, started it up and once again dumping white smoke with rough idle and a knock. Called diesel care and they suggested caping off each fuel line at the rail and see which one stops the smoking. they think that the system wasnt primed properly and air made injector stick open. Could this be the case? should i cap rail and see or should i pull all injectors and send all back (already not happy cus injectors i ordered were backordered and they sent me 40 overs instead of the 50's like I wanted)? Thanks for any help! 03 Cummins common rail Video of truck idling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfDbbNmhbHs&feature=youtu.be

Fired up my pile yesterday after it sat for a week or so, and it's hazing at idle pretty badly. Grey smoke, smells like [thick, but] healthy exhaust. I have straight exhaust with just an expansion chamber and I can see a pronounced 'puff' of thicker smoke that makes me think it's one cyl in particular. Searching for hazing or haze didn't turn much up so I figured I'd post for thoughts before I pull the trigger on a set of RV275s from DAP (24v head, P7100 pump). I'm heading out for a weekend of offroading tonight (towing heavy of course, probably 23-24k through PA mountains for 250+mi each way). I don't really want to try to check/set timing before I go, but it's possible that it has slipped since I did the cam swap 6-7 months ago. From what I read the popoff pressure difference 12v to 24v retards timing about 3˚, and I think I set mine to be effectively around 14-15˚ (17-18 by the table). Just put a fresh mechanical lift pump on it roadside a month ago after a sudden failure had me doing 30mph up hills on the DC beltway, and fuel pressure is good. I let it run for close to an hour, it never cleared up. Revs smooth, whether slowly or quickly - doesn't break up. This motor has seen a ton of abuse from me with the ongoing fuel line failures, it's probably done a couple thousand miles in 5 cylinder mode. Who knows what sort of issues that could cause in the long run. Also has a pretty unknown history besides having come from a bus, and having been under my hood for the past 40k or so. I've never done an oil analysis or anything. What I don't know won't scare me - - - Updated - - - details: stock ISB205 injectors (175-225k mi) stock B5.9 215 pump and DVs (311k mi) "Big Stick" cam Details (18k mi) I think this motor has some pretty healthy blow-by, it'll push some oil out the dipstick tube. Drinks probably a quart per 1000 miles when being worked. - - - Updated - - - sounds like identical symptoms that were confirmed by replacement here: http://www.dieselbombers.com/diesel-distress-support-ticket/100352-excessive-smokes-exhaust-popping-2.html I've had an exhaust "pop" when I'm to the floor under load for a little while, I was afraid I was barking the turbo and just stayed away from doing it. I can hardly wait to pull all my fuel lines. again. :banghead:

I need some advice from someone smarter than myself on what may cause my issue. I am getting white smoke under acceleration until the truck gets to operating temp then it goes away completely and I can't make it smoke. No smoke whatsoever at idle just a puff of black just as it starts. I just recently replaced a head gasket so EVERYTHING has been taken off my truck recently and I'm not sure where to begin to start if I have a connection that may be fouled up. One thing I do need to do after reading some of Mopar's articles on injector and fuel line reinstalling after the change and I have realized I need to first take the tubes back out and clean the tips of them as well as tighten the fuel lines onto the tubes before I tighten the injector down to ensure I tight seal. That being said I do smell fuel when the truck is running and an near positive I am getting air intrusion, I just want to make sure while I have it all apart that I check anything that may need checked. Since the replacement of the head gasket I am getting no fluid mixing, no bubbles in the coolant, and no overheating issues, so I don't think its the head gasket again. I am going to re-torque while I have everything apart just as a precaution just to check, but like I said many of you know much more than I do, so while I'm working I want to make sure I check anything that could be problematic. Thanks in advance for any advice.Jason

Well, I was going to take my truck in today to have the codes read because I had the p1693 companion code. To review, I started another thread about my truck choking out on the highway, where I could power through it or back off and it would go away. Then my batteries died and after installing the new ones the truck seemed to run great! Now to my new issue... Towed my rock truck to an event this weekend and the truck only "choked" a little on the way up. Coming back I had to drag my buddies trailer back. 40 foot gooseneck with two buggies on it. I'm guessing 16,000 pounds. Truck was running great, went to lay into the throttle going up a hill and holy cow I thought my truck was going to shake itself in half and break apart. Same symptons as before, I could power through it or lay off the throttle and it would go away. This happened in OD and out of OD. So I took it easy the rest of the way home because everytime I would get into the throttle this shaking, choking, thing would happen. Well, made it back to town and after unhooking decided to do the key trick. I got a pdone no more p1693. ( maybe my new batteries had something to do with this.) I fired up the truck and then stomped the pedal, in park, to hear my exhaust bounce of my buddies concrete wall. about 1500 RPMS it went pah, pah, choke, stutter, vroom. Sorry no other way to explain it. Did it a couple of more times and the same thing happened. I also noticed when this happened I would get a puff of black smoke followed by white smoke. If I steadily pressed the accelerator pedal it wouldn't miss a beat and rev all the way to 3K with no issues. But, as soon as I stomped it hard it would choke and do all the other stuff as it was in the 1500rpm range. I started the truck this morning and tried to repeat the problem and coudn't get it to repeat the problem. Got to work and tried it after the truck warmed up and the symptoms were there again, stomp the pedal, choking, cough, pah pah, vrroom, black smoke then white smoke and still showing a pdone code. Help!!!! Sorry for the long post but don't know how else to describe it. So what do you think is happening or worst yet happened?
