  1. Thank you all, its less daunting knowing I can pause and fall back on the site reference ideas. More so that I can read up before I head out to the garage. I know how diesels work from my power industry training but actually turning wrenches on them is just something I have never had to do. I have always been steam and Aero. Not the big stuff though I do smaller co-generation apps. Going to keep going through the site for Ideas...I have already seen a ton of good photos. .
  2. Starting my weekend tomorrow morning so I will go under and see what the fuel system has. I had been told in my intro about the lift pump and gauges. I couldn't believe the difference the 2cycle made...I started my into thread on my first shift three days ago? and filled up on the way home. Amazing. I was just looking at another thread about cool down...I have been waiting 2min. normal no load driving. I am assuming EGT is exhaust gas temp?? but I am not sure. Come the summer I may be towing quite a bit and I don't want to mess this up. Is there a gauge for EGT I need to install??
  3. Recently picked up a 1999 Dodge 5.9L Turbo Dually. Good friend retiring gave me a great deal. It has 350k miles on it and as far as I know no lift pump, which I just learned about here when I signed up and I don't recall him saying anything about 2cycle which I learned here on my first day to. I know how to do quite a bit with engines of all sorts but I was wondering If I should or shouldn't have a garage do the 170k maintenance recommended i.e the trans work. I have a check engine light on which the said is the APPS. I have the Haynes and changing it out seem straight forward enough???Also ABS light comes on intermittently and I can see I need new shocks. No questions there just rambling off a work list.Did I mention this is my first experience with diesels despite being around mechanics for 25 years. Daunting, but seems like its going to be a fun challenge.
  4. To tired at the moment to find a better place for this Thank you but WOW....just WOW. Filled up on the way home from work did like you said with the 2cycle and just that little bit of change had the engine sounding so much smoother(40min drive home). Have to get some rest before my next shift but definitely hooked on this site. Thanks again!!Native
  5. auto trans? yes. At the moment I have been awake for about 20 or more hours, first night shift this week and I had to be awake early to help out a friends son before work. I will figure out how to update my stats/sig after I have had some sleep. Been having to much fun reading. I'm amazed at how much time people here put into their answers with links and clear explanations. Gonna love hanging out here and hopefully being able to be as helpful some day to. I could teach you how to rebuild a jet engine but I have never had much time to be around diesels. I'm thinking this in going to be a blast
  6. Hey Randy, I find myself keeping several tabs open, highlighting words and phrases I don't know and reading the articles I find. Thank you for pointing me in the mod direction, it would never have occurred to me at this point to start looking into it. I have read a few things about clean fuel and quality parts but hadn't seen anything yet on adding the 2cycle to the fuel for my fuel pump. Making that a priority first thing this morning. This truck had one owner prior to me and I will have to crawl around it and see what he did though mostly it looks like wiring for his speakers and CB. I haven't been this excited about a new project in a long time and I am looking forward to spending some time getting this truck tip top. Thanks again,Native

Hi, My name is Native. I recently acquired a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 and I know nothing about Diesel engines. I have a strong automotive back ground and have worked in the power industry for over 20 years so taking on new equipment is nothing new to me. I find I am liking this truck more and more every day I drive it though and I want to take care of it so here I am. Looking forward to soaking up as much knowledge as I can.
