  1. I bought my truck about 2 years ago and it has a Jake Brake (the real thing made by Jacobs) with the Cummins name on it. It seems to work correctly though I'm not sure I'm using it correctly. It only engages above 35 mph and when you give it gas at any speed it disengages. My question is when I'm towing my 10k travel trailer, do I leave the pull switch on the gear shifter engaged all the time or do I engage it only when I think i need it? Thanks,Stew
  2. Last night I actually looked closer and rubbed the caked dirt off the muffler. It is a Banks Monster 9" x 20", in the stock location. I think my problem may lie in the fact there is a 1- piece pipe, 9' long, from the down pipe to the muffler with no hangers on it. That pipe is probably creating a good bit of harmonic resonance kind of like a giant guitar string. Just breaking it up with a resonator and/or cat it might make the drone go away, in addition to the effect of the resonator itself. Thoughts? Stew - - - Updated - - - Just pulled the trigger on a short FTE resonator and Magnaflow 49-State Cat. I will post back here when I get it installed and tested. Since the resonator is a well-proven device, I would like to install the cat, drive it, then install the resonator. Thanks so far for helping me think through this. Stew
  3. OK, OK, I will spend the money. Guess I need to go back to my meetings for CA - Cheapskates Anonymous. Stew - - - Updated - - - You're right. I just went and looked and WOW! I forgot how long the exhaust pipe really is. I reckon it will be a cat and 30" FTE resonator for me then. Thanks a bunch! Y'all been real helpful. Stew
  4. Thanks for all the replies.I've got this question going on several forums and it looks like I just need to try the cat alone. If that doesn't cut it then add the resonator. Maybe my next mod will be a set of earplugs to replace the drone on the long family trips. :)Stew
  5. Thanks for the offer but I already have a cat available. My next question is if I have a cat and muffler, would the short version of the resonator be enough? I haven't measured but I might be running out if pipe to cut out for the 30". Stew
  6. How was the drone before the muffler delete?
  7. Sniffer test required. I would like to kill both birds with just the cat if I can. Maybe I should just go cat first then add the resonator if necessary. Just trying to if there's a firm answer either way. Stew
  8. I thought might get a few people wondering why on earth I would want to change anything.
  9. 2006 qclb with muffler, no cat. The exhaust is a cat-back system of unknown origin from the previous owner. I have a terrible drone when towing. So bad I can't hear the wife and kids when pulling the travel trailer. I need to get rid of it as it defeats the purpose of family trips when you can't talk along the way. Besides, it's just plain uncomfortable on long hauls. I've read a lot about the FTE resonator but I need to install a cat for emissions inspections where we are moving. My question is will the cat solve the drone issue or am I looking at needing both a cat and a resonator?Apparently, mega cabs have factory resonators while qclb's don't. Was the cat good enough for drone suppression or am I missing something? Thanks,Stew
  10. Thanks for the help. As it turns out, the cab was offset to the right about 3/4". Loosened the 8 bolts and used a pry bar to move it over. Everything lines up nicely now. Strange though, 4 bolts were 3/4" and 4 of them were 18mm. Stew
  11. Thanks! Guess I know what I'll be doing this afternoon. Stew
  12. I put a headache rack on my bed and discovered the bed is not quite aligned with the cab. Can it be moved slightly from side to side if I loosen the bolts? Thanks,Stew
  13. Well, the TC is medium blue and looks to have a billet cover. I found a thread that talked about Recon TC's made by Transtar. They look to be exactly the same color as mine so I'm guessing that's what I have. There are several levels they sell from a stock replacement to one that will withstand well over 1000 ft-lbs. All have billet front covers and all strongly suggest doing a VB upgrade. The nearest upgrade from stock is single disc and up to 750 ft-lbs, and I assume the PO at least went that high. The next level is a triple-disc option. Based on how much money the PO spent on other upgrades I'm also assuming he went the distance and upgraded the VB as well. I recently had the tranny flushed so I will have to wait awhile before I drop the pan to check the VB. Of course that is all pure speculation. I have to say, before I knew better I "tested" my H&S tuner on the 200 HP setting and don't recall any slippage. Gunned it at about 20 mph and it slammed me into the seat and scared the wits out of my two daughters! Reminded of my Z-28 days in high school. Recon TC's may not be top of the line, but since I got this truck at a great price even without upgrades I can't complain. Given that I don't race and very seldom romp on the gas pedal, I think it will do fine for towing my travel trailer. Stew
  14. Thanks for the tips. When I get a couple minutes to rub together I will have to get the cover off to see what kind of converter I have. It would be nice if the PO upgraded it.Stew
  15. I have a 2006 DRW quadcab with the 48re tranny in it. I bought the truck from used car dealer in town and he had no idea of the history of it. The truck was obviously used to pull a lot because it's equipped with a gooseneck ball mount and had a fifth wheel hitch as well as air springs in it at one time. Other mods that were removed by the PO are a boost gauge and egt gauge (the boost sensor is still there with about an inch of hose with a screw in it and there are two non-factory holes in the manifold right where an egt probe would have been). Anyway, I've had it about a year now and got a Mini Maxx tuner on it so I'm wondering how to tell if the tranny was modded before. The mods I'm sure of are a Mag-Hytec pan on it big enough to take a bath in and an extra tranny fluid cooler on front of the radiator. Those mods lead me to believe that there must be more mods inside like maybe the torque converter, the valve body, etc. This is my first Dodge Cummins so I'm not familiar with the 48re at all. How do I go about determining what additional mods if any were done to the tranny? Thanks,Stew
