  1. A little more than 220,000 on the truck. Previous owners didn’t mention any injector changes. We had to move it across the parking lot. I could have swore I heard a pingy rattle sound coming from the engine area. We are still looking for a local mechanic.
  2. We did make it to Breckinridge but power did seem to dwindle a bit more and when I put it in park it high revved for about 10 seconds this time. Backing in the camper there seemed to be a stutter of some sort. Not knowing the total age of injectors I’ve suggested they get their minds ready to buy new and install before the ride home. We are shopping online but does anyone have a suggestion for a place not too terribly far where we could take the injectors and have them tested and buy new if needed. And/or suggestions on a good mechanic? We don’t have a big arsenal of tools with us. I noticed the 5th nut back on the fuel line coming off the rail is wet. I’m wondering if we could be leaking fuel and/or air there and causing the symptoms also. thanks again for all the help.
  3. Update: stopped for fuel and put it in park. Engine revved a few hundred rpm for about 3 seconds before coming down to correct idle.
  4. Not original owners and not sure on injectors. No tuner or part upgrades except steering components. We just put T-steering and new mopar steering box upgrade on it Wednesday night before having it aligned. sorry, 70mph. It is my dad’s truck so I’m not as familiar with it as I’d like to be. He “feels” it doesn’t have the power it should. Automatic trans. I’ve been watching the oil level for a rise. I can’t smell diesel but it is windy. We are now headed north towards I-25. MPG’s seem to be holding steady. I’ve been thinking weak or leaky injector? Thanks again for helping.
  5. Hey John! This is partially in comparison to a previous trip in the same truck pulling the same camper on the same road at the same speed with lower temps and less headwind this trip than last. We don’t have approx weight of the 5th wheel camper, but truck is 2500 automatic 4WD 3:73 ratio. It has 220,000 miles and we’re on 265/70/17 tires. We calculated mileage based on GPS miles from one fuel station to the next and how many gallons to fill up at the pump, which is how we’ve calculated on previous trips.
  6. We’re in a 2003 pulling a 28’ camper from OK to Breckinridge, CO down I-40 toward Amarillo. Fuel mileage had suddenly dropped to 8.5mpg. Air filter has been checked, new tires are on and truck was just aligned, fairly new fuel filter, valves were recently ran, oil level doesn’t seem to be rising, no noticeable smoke coming out of exhaust, truck isn’t overheating, possibly feels a little weak but still running well. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Should we find a diesel mechanic or keep driving? Thanks for any help!
  7. It seems like it is the pump itself that is leaking though I can't find a visible problem. Going to try and wire it up later and see if I can get it to leak outside of the truck. I was considering a walbro pump conversion install since I have one lying around. Does anyone have a good, current suggestion for a regulator to pair with it.
  8. So I went out this morning and started my truck. I immediately noticed lots of diesel dripping off the starter and the vent tube. The common denominator seems to be both of those mornings it was below freezing. I guess with it was parked uphill last weekend when it got cold it allowed the lines to empty and thus not starting. Once the engine was warm there was no longer a visible leak. Now to fix it. I I treat my fuel and these other auggestions are at the top of my priority list. I agree. I parked it and drove the 3rd gen I've been working up to sell.
  9. I got called out to work right after postong and have been hooked up since. I'll give an upsate asap. I've started it twice after sitting a few days and it started wothout a hitch.
  10. My fuel gauge is not yet hooked up. I did an alternator and cable job on it a few weeks ago. P1693, P0237, P0382 are codes presently stored. I just tried to start it again and it started fine.
  11. I havent tried to start it again yet. Lift pump is at roughly 60k miles and sings like a song when I bump the starter. 98.5 24v Tank was a little over a quarter tank. I am looking for my code reader. I guess I misplaced it. Will post when I find it.
  12. I have never had my truck give any issues starting. If anything it starts easier/quicker than any diesel I've ever driven. After it sat from Sat eve to Monday afternoon in an uphill position it did not want to start. I pushed in on the clutch and let it roll to a more level surface and this didn't seem to help. Finally after just letting the starter crank for a bit it came to life and drove home without any problems. Little puffs of smoke were coming out while cranking. Any ideas for me to look in to? (Still a stock truck) Some possible things of note: the check engine light is not on but it has come on a few times in the last few months but then went back off again, and I have noticed rarely when I accelerate a brief moment of hesitation.
  13. I called DAP yesterday and put in an order to get the ball rolling. Thanks for the help!
  14. Thanks for the replies. Another question - should I go with the 12 or the 14? How much difference does or what would make me choose one over the other.
  15. So allow me to ask a new question based off of replies. My truck spends most of its time between 500 and 3000 ft elevation (morr on the low side). Again, with a quad and 150hp injectors what single would you guys suggest? Good for towing with a NV4500. Looking around in the more recent forums there seems to be a lot of talk about GXE 57 and SXE 62. I cant find the meaning of "G" and "S."
  16. Sorry. It shows just past 200k but when I bought it the mileage wasn't being recorded. Sounds like I just need to try the single setup and I have a good chance of being happy with it.
  17. I tow a few boats, 5th wheel camper (sometimes out of state), lots of shorter runs with flat bed hauling hay, tractors and implements, skid steers, other pick-up trucks... that is the more common stuff. I really would like a fuller 8406 but I'm not in a position currently to solve the 4wd problem. I have to have the 4wd for the farming bits.
  18. Sorry for the delay and thanks again for the replies. Allow me to elaborate on some of my thoughts. The guy I'm working with says that he has quit trying to sale 98.5 and 99 heads because the valve seats are always cracked and in reverse of that the 2001 and 02s seem to always be good. So, figuring there is a good chance my 98.5 head isnt in top shape I was strongly considering putting a head on it and upgraded valve spring and friends. I was hoping this plus twins would give me a little broader rpm range when needed. Am I off track? You guys seem very happy with your singles and I value your experience.
  19. My butt and my OBDLINK both say I'm spoolin' and pullin' from 1900 to 2700. I feel like I'd prefer a 150 - 200 lower than that or am I driving wrong? AH64ID, do you have a couple of specific smaller s400 turbos you would suggest to me? I'm currently running aluminum 3rd gen wheels on both sets of tires. When I ran 34" tires on them I loved the mileage and could move at a nice breezy pace in 4th but 3rd to 4th was rough. I was hoping a stronger better tuned engine would help with that. It was probably psycological but river crossings in low didnt feel like an ion to me. That is an interesting note about the 3.73 ratio. I think I'll give it a try.
  20. This is definitely part of what I'm wanting to reach. I feel I'm having trouble asking the correct questions. For me it isnt so much about a particular power level as much as I want the truck to pull strong and do it well. I want to tune/set-up the truck with upgrades so that when it is happy it is also somewhere around that 400hp-ish area. And I'd like to do it with a compound setup. (BTW thanks for the list of cons and dose of reality. I'll keep those in mind.) Thanks for the replies! So from my research I'm feeling the vibe for 150 hp injectors and there appears to be a lot of knowledge and experience here with that size. Can I expect reasonable fuel mileage with 150s or will it really drop? Would a small s400s work well with my HX35? And if so, is there a particular small s400s that would be highly recommended? Side note: I'm currently disappointed with how much time and rpm it takes to spool up my HX35.
  21. Thanks for the reply. I understand I dont need the extra turbo to reach the hp goal. I wanted them more for the characteristics I've been reading about. Trying to be wise and weed out the big fish tails. I was originally going to get a big turbo for free so I thought "why not?" But now I'm sort of stuck on the concept. The hp goal isnt really the point. I want it to tow well. If I can run 500hp and keep good running qualities, efficiency, and longevity with good driving I'm all in. My truck wears two hats. It is more of a hunting rig in the fall/winter and a tows cows, hay, boats, construction supplies, etc in spring summer. In looking at compounds it seems that for towing, not racing, that maybe the s400s are a bit much and I'd get better and quicker tow qualities from some slightly smaller stuff? But the prices seem to very widely and I'm not good with spending extra thousands for something that is marginal. And it seems like somewhere between 75 and 150hp injectors is where the magic balance is? Mopar1973man I've been playing with tire sizes and the final drives. I was glad to see you had some specific info on your results. So far my results have made me want to go up to a 6 speed. I feel that compounds would help me stretch my tire size a little bit and still get from 3rd to 4rth ok while towing. Does that sound like foolishness? I generally only tow with bigger tires during winter. I run 33" tires in the spring/summer. I'm currently looking for the right cab'chassis rear end to swap out my srw axle.
  22. I think I'm finally ready to ask these questions. I have decided to upgrade my 24v with a quadzilla adrenaline, injectors, compound turbo, and an exhaust brake. I am not interested in rolling coal. I do not race but I do tow. I like reliability and longevity. My NV4500 has a 450hp clutch. And I'm installing a new lift pump and lines. I'd like suggestions on compound setup and which injectors to match them with. I initially planned to build my own setup but now I'm leaning to buying a kit. I feel like I want to be in that 350-425hp area. If possible I'd like to keep air filter in place (corner of passenger cowl) but it isnt a deal breaker. Thanks for any input.
  23. It was something you said on another thread about timing that essentially talked me out of it and made me appreciate the vp more. My bud got a 2010 that came with the brake and I was sold immediately. I plan to get an exhaust brake just as soon as I get my turbo choices situated. I have decided I want a compound set up. A friend told me he'd give me the turbo out of his 855 Peterbuilt for nothing. But I've decided I'm not a good enough welder/pipe bender to pull that off at the moment. My current plan is to buy a kit when I sale the other truck.
  24. Definitely addicting. I think it will get worse if/when I add an exhaust brake. That's a heck of a trio. I have to admit I've gone back and forth a little on dropping the 98.5 for the 07. And I've also considered p-pumping the 98.5. In the end I keep settling on the 98.5 but wishing it was an 01 or 02. And I enjoy borrowing my brother's 93.
  25. I apologize I didnt mention I got it fixed. It was a quick and easy change the sensor on the rear diff. However I have a 2007 I'm trying to work the bugs out of so I can get it sold. I'm trying to fix the speedometer issue on it and a new rear sensor did not fix it. Would that same info apply to the 2007? Thanks, I may take you up on that someday! Thanks all for the warm welcomes! Could I get any recommendations of a good store with a selection of 2nd gen parts/upgrades that will speak to you and work with prices?
