  1. Don't know if anyone wants to know just how much was spent, not counting my time, on this project but could possible save some time and expense so here goes. I took the route of do the easiest and cheapest first. Fuel Filter ($13.46), Fuel pump ($98.68), APPS which was returned and restock fee was $9.80 plus $3.02 shipping, ECM also returned after restock fee of $167.25 plus $12.00 shipping, VP44 cost and used $975. Truck had a code of P1689 and the trouble was that VP44 and nothing else. I thank everyone for their help and could not have done this without it. THANKS Also bought a code reader (Bosch) that cost $109. Anyone want to kick in and help pay for all these mistakes????
  2. Read somewhere that oil should be added to this new diesel fuel. Any info on this and if so what kind of oil should be used.
  3. GUESS WHAT!!!! Charged the batteries a couple hours each disconnected, hooked them back, engine cranked over half dozen time and kicked right off. GUESS AGAIN!!!! Truck is now running like it should so problem was the VP44 and thank goodness. Think I'll get a job working on diesel trucks now. Thanks ever so much for the info you and everyone else has provided cause I really needed it..
  4. Trying to bleed the air out of the lines now. Which one's and how many need to be bleed. Batteries ran down so on charge cycle now. Anything special that need to be done beside bleed the air?
  5. Don't know anyone that even owns a diesel truck. Live out in the sticks and don't get around much. Especially now that that dumb truck is giving me a fit. Thanks for the help.
  6. Replaced VP44 but have not gotten the truck running yet. A difficult job for an old coot.
  7. anyone know where I can purchase the PSG in the VP44. Took that sucker out of the truck today and boy was that a pain in the everywhere.
  8. If the MAP sensor output voltage reads 5 Volts DC which is the same as the input voltage would indicate that this sensor output is shorted to the input. What effect will this have on how the truck will runs??? Would like to know.
  9. What are the symptoms if the map sensor quits working properly. Does this have any effect on the operation of the engine. Thanks for replying again. One of the pins going to the APPS is labeled "low idle select". Does anyone know what that signal is and what it is for?????
  10. Is that what is called PSG on the VP44 and can it be repaired. Noticed there is a place in England that says they repair the PSG5 in the VP44. Just wondering if this is possible and if there is any place in the states that does this? Thanks
  11. Thanks for the info. put a new apps on & reset - no change. Lift Pump and filter - no change, ECM - no change, less than .03 v on alternator, code still P1689.
  12. ECM not the problem. Truck still performs exactly the same with new ECM so what to do next??? I have a couple of questions hope someone can help with. 1. How many inputs are connected to the ECM ? 2. If any of these inputs are defective what will be the trouble that shows there is a problem? 3. Will any of these inputs cause the ECM to not function correctly? 4. Wiring diagram shows an electrical connection between the ECM and PCM on these trucks. What is that for? 5. Someone said to much ripple on the dc voltage coming from the alternator can ruin the ECM. If so what is the results?6. 6. What should be the maximum voltage coming from the alternator? That is a start. More to come & hope not creating a problem for anyone.
  13. Ebay has some for around $850 and rework for $450. Don't know if they can be tusted to do the job correctly.
  14. Any suggestions where I can purchase an ECM for my truck that has a reasonable price.
  15. Thanks for the info. The signal from ecm to vp44 is only .4 volts and according to warwick it should be 2 volts peak to peak so looks like I need an ecm. Any suggestions where to get one and is there a dependable place to have this one fixed. Several places on the web but would like some advice on a trusted site.
  16. Just wondering what all the sensor inputs that feed the ECM actually do and what effect they have on the operation of the engine. There is an article on Diesel Bomber with the same problem I have. He followed typical suggestions and replace APPS, ECM, VP44, lift pump and filter, checked all the wire and pulled the wiring harness, checked all grounds and every time he cranked it up the same problem is still there. He finally gave up and parted the truck. I don't want to go through the same nightmare & would like to determine what is the cause of this problem without simply guessing that maybe that is the problem. So logical ideas that can be checked to determine the actual problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.
  17. Does anyone have the electronic schematic of the inside of the ECM along with what the signals look like on a O'scope and their amplitude. I have the equipment and know how to use them if I could get a copy of the schematic. I have a copy of the wiring diagram of truck but no info on the type signal or strength from sensor or between the ECM and VP44. Will buy the info if it is available. Thanks everyone.
  18. AC noise on alternator ranges from .025 to /.030 ACV. Also checked and cleaned the last two ground wires although they looked good. Keep them coming and I will check them and thanks.
  19. Don't want to sell. Got an offer couple month ago for $12000 cash and guess will have to go for the expensive stuff. Wish knew for sure if it is the VP or ECM. My luck will go the wrong way. Love my truck.
  20. Original VP, ECM and had original lift pump until this problem. Replaced the pump with oem original from Rock Auto along with filter. Old pump was still working but someone said the problem was probably the pump. No friends with a diesel and live in no-mans-land. Closest Dodge shop about 50 miles. Seems everything that goes on these trucks are pricey so will have to go back to pinto's if have to buy either of those items. Wife says it was a lightening storm that went through a few days before the trouble. Problem with that is she is usually right so I need to find something simple like a loose wire. Have checked for what might be bad or broken wire but no luck. Thank and hope don't get to be to much trouble. Ray
  21. Used a Fluke 77 to check continuity and shorts on wires from ECM and VP44 plugs and all checked OK except there is no connector in pin 9 off the VP44 connector. Schematic does not show a pin 9 so I assumed that was OK for it not to exist. Pain in the butt to get that ECM connector off but everything looks good. Still haven't gotten the ground connectors apart. That's next hopefully. more suggestions please. ???? Ray
  22. Wait to start light comes on as soon as the key is on and times out as usual. Have checked and cleaned most of the grounds but not the ones on the passenger side that have plugs. Couldn't get them apart. Checked the vp44 plug and ecm plug and no damage and plenty of grease. Wiring checked OK also. New batteries couple months back and cable connectors are clean and tight. Read the article mentioned above and have about decided it is probably the ecm but would like to be sure if possible so looking for ideas. Eight hundred plus is hard on us old (77) retired deplorables. Will go back to the ground cables connectors with more determination. Sure appreciate your time.
