  1. Well if that's what causes it that shouldn't be the problem if flushing once a year is plenty. With that being said any thoughts on engine builders>?
  2. Had a head gasket go on the 99 cummins and trying to get a game plan. Haven't pulled the head yet but mechanic says these trucks are known to have issues with pitting from coolant. If this is the case to fix the problem involves pulling the motor. My thoughts are to just go back with a short block and have a fresh motor since all the work is done. Who out there is a reputable engine builder before and after the sale? Right now I'm already having issues with the builder of the new nv4500 I just put in the truck so I don't want to run into this again. So I'm looking at a worse case scenario with the new engine.
  3. Well standard transmission is offering to send me another transmission. Charge me for it then reimburse me once the one I have gets back to them, like a core charge. What's the chances that doesn't turn into drama?
  4. I agree with it being bad but when the tranny people are dead set that it's the clutch what do I do. The shop only installed everything Standard Transmission out of Texas built it. I'll probably pull it and send it back to them. The problem seems to be worse up shifting and not down shifting so my uneducated guess is tranny not clutch.
  5. I had this same clutch on the old tranny and had no issues so I didn't go with heavy duty hydraulics. I did put new hydraulics. Like I stated earlier this tranny is completely new from front to back. The clutch starts to operate at about half pedal so I don't think its a throw issue. No doubt I'm going to have to pull the tranny just need to figure what is the root cause of the problem.
  6. I know the shop changed everything because I have the old clutch parts. It's not a dual disc, it's the 13" upgrade that I believe is rated up to around 600hp. This truck is mostly stock, 75hp injectors is about the only hop up. Just at a loss that it was smooth shifting for about 3 weeks. I noticed today that if I down shift through each gear instead of going from say 5th to 3rd it seems to help. Transmissions are the one thing I don't know much about so when your thoughts are it's more so a clutch problem makes me ask why it doesn't do it with all the gears. Talked to the Valair guy and his words exactly were "Clutch doesn't know what gear it is, so if it was the clutch it would do it to all the gears." The tranny guy says that it's a disengagement problem so it has to be the clutch. I'm into this project for almost 3 grand and I just want it fixed. So what ever the consensus is here is what I'll do because nothing to gain or lose from the opinions here. And the truck is a farm flatbed drove by a 48yr old so it's not out rolling coal.
  7. Let me start by saying the tranny is new along with new valair clutch and hydraulics in a 99 ram 3500 with NV4500. Had local shop install everything and all was good for about 3 weeks. Now for some reason the tranny has issues with 3rd and 4th gears. There are times I shift through all 5 gears with just a little forcing but there are times it'll hang in 3rd are 4th gear. Before the major issues I noticed at times from a stop I would have to cycle to fourth before I could get into 2nd. I am at loss because it work so smoothly for the first couple of weeks. I have spoke to the tranny builders and Valair and of course each of them blames the other's product. The truck starts rolling at about half pedal so my guess is it isn't the clutch. Not to mention it works "better" in all the other gears. I would like opinions before I start pulling parts off this truck. Want to be sure I am arguing with the right people. Any thoughts????????????
  8. I see there is a Weller truck in Houston which is about 45min from me. My local shops don't rebuild manual transmissions they send them off to get done. I'll Weller a call to see what they offer, I would think they are just as reputable down south as they are in Boise.
  9. Well it's not the 5th gear nut. He is throwing some 1200$ rebuild numbers for the tranny but not sure I want him rebuilding anything. So I need recommendations on where to get another tranny. Oh and also before the mechanic knew how much a valair clutch cost he told me he kind of smoked the 6 month old clutch getting into shop. Remember stuck in 5th. This is going to get ugly before it gets better.
  10. The truck runs stock size tires, it's a flat bed cab and chassis. Only ad-ons are 75Hp injectors and a FASS 150gph lift pump, but no means is it a hot rod. The truck is mostly an empty everyday ,farm truck, driver but time to time may pull up to 20,000lb gooseneck. I'm trying to make a decision on buying a new tranny because I'm still waiting on a diagnosis on truck. If I buy a new tranny who do you recommend buying a reman. from? I'm definitely going to learn how to rebuild trannies after these issues but until then I have to get truck back on the road.
  11. Had the 5th gear retainer nut installed by my local shop about 6 months ago and now 5th is hung in gear. Just returned from that shop and was told they can't see any problem from shifter section on top of the tranny so it must be internal. He told me he shouldn't have to pull the tranny since 5th is in the tail section, that just means a little less in labor. This 5th gear is starting to $500 here $500 there me to death. He hasn't pulled the tail section off to see what exactly the problem is but I am sure it want be anything to do with the retainer nut because that is what he put in and said I would never have the issue again. So far he is correct I haven't loss 5th but now that is all I have is 5th. Transmissions are one of the things I don't know much about but this is causing me to educate myself. This 5th gear has been a problem for years in this tranny, so this mechanic should have a good idea on the fix. I want to go back in Monday and let him know what I want fixed since he has had the truck 2 weeks and is still in the diagnosing phase. What do I do now???????????
