  1. I certainly wish I had stuck to a factory or Redhead gear box since the improvement was not what I had hoped for for the money spent. But it's too late now I suppose. I haven't tried increasing rpm too much, but I'm sure that would help. I rarely need to turn the wheel from a dead stop either, but I noticed in our 05 Silverado (and any other vehicle for that matter) it was no problem to turn the wheels at a stop. I just don't want to have to rev up the truck just to pull out of a stop and look silly. Not really an issue I ever encounter so it's not a huge deal but I just like knowing I could if I had to. I also filled with Royal Purple synthetic as well.
  2. Hey guys, a couple months ago I replaced my power steering system. Borgeson gear box, pump, shaft and hoses. Also installed a filter (yes it is flowing the correct direction). When I try to turn the wheels from a dead stop I can't turn the wheel either direction more than maybe a quarter turn before it locks up. As soon as I start moving it's like butter and while driving it's smooth. When I first bled the system I sucked air in and also ended up over filling the pump but now the fluid level is good and I re-bled the system so it shouldn't have any air in it. I just can't turn the wheel at a stop. Any ideas? The tires are only stock 265's so it's not like I'm trying to turn big heavy tires. I had read some people saying the Borgeson pump was fairly weak at low rpm's... maybe that's why? I also read a couple guys had this issue from the day they bought the truck new. I can't imagine why though and would like to fix it if possible because that's just not how it's supposed to be. I've never driven another vehicle that had that problem. If it's common and not a big deal I can live with it, but I'm trying to smooth out some final kinks with the truck this summer so I can have a completely problem-free truck lol
  3. Did some reading and I think I have air trapped in the system. Heres my current situation after adding more fluid: -when parked, steering wheel will not turn full lock to lock, pump whines, fluid got very slightly frothy but that went away quickly -when truck is running and warm, the fluid in reservoir just seems to be sitting there, not much movement -drives nice except whines on full lock turns and when making short, quick, rapid steering wheel movements I think I sucked in a bunch of air when attempting to bleed the system the first time... hence the foam and overflow. Should I jack it back up and just keep doing a bunch of lock to lock turns? And if so, should I leave the cap off?
  4. Well I just swapped everything out, new hoses, new box, new pump. Filled with Royal Purple synthetic fluid. I didn't buy enough fluid though. I had a question about the bleeding process... I jacked it up, filled it, got in and turned the wheels around a bit ENGINE OFF, then got my bro to come turn the truck on and pump the brakes and turn the wheel while I filled. After maybe 20 seconds of this, the fluid foamed up and started overflowing as I was filling. Turned it off, let it sit a little, then retried it and took a loop around my street. It drives nice, but the pump is whining when it gets close to full lock. And I THINK the foaming stopped as well, I will have to check next time I run it. Anywho, the fluid is still a little low so am I hoping this is the problem. But does anyone else have any ideas incase it keeps up? What else should I look for?
  5. This thread makes me happy... my steering is pretty loose as well. My pump just puked all the fluid out so I am upgrading the entire system. As of now, I have the Rock Solid Ram bushing and borgeson steering shaft installed. I have all new hoses, gear box and pump from Borgeson sitting in my garage now. I'm also putting a Magnifine inline filter on the system and using Royal Purple full synthetic fluid. I have a gear box brace coming in from Dodge Off Road, but they lost my order and are just now getting to it so I will just have to wait to put it on til it gets here. I CANNOT wait til my truck steers better than new!
  6. Quick question, I got the new PS pump yesterday, there are no new seals or o-rings of any sort. Is this because there is no seals for just pulling the PS pump off the vac pump? Or should I need any new seals? I've decided I will just pull the PS pump by itself and not the vac pump with it... I will just deal with lining up the shaft when I get to it.
  7. Well thats good to hear. I ordered a Borgeson Hi-flo pump and all new hoses last night. I probably went a little over board but I will feel better knowing for sure that it's all new in there and all I need to do is keep it maintained... one less thing on the list of questions about the history of the truck.
  8. Finally got in there with a flashlight and the PS pump is soaked on the bottom... didn't even bother checking the fluid level. I took a closer look at the oil on the ground and it must of been a slow leak for a while. My shop did the Goulds vac kit install, so I would hope everything is correct with that... Now, for replacing the pump, will I have to undo any of the work they did on the vac pump or is that a seperate procedure? I think I will just go ahead and replace the pump with all the lines as well...probably upgrade to the Borgeson kit or something to go with the new gear box. I bought the truck with 200K and no idea what the previous owner did, so I am fixing and maintaining things myself as they come up. Oh and just to clarify, it is just PS fluid leaking now, so what ever the shop did with the vac pump is still working. I'm hoping I don't have to pull that apart but from what I'm reading, it is easier to pull the PS and vac pump as a single unit.
  9. I'm actually noticing some new spots on the ground under the truck... they were mixed in with previous oil leaks that are now fixed lol... hopefully there is a leak somewhere to make this a little more easy to pinpoint.
  10. Hey guys, I started my truck up yesterday and suddenly had no power brakes or steering. It was running fine a couple days ago and showed no symptoms or strange noises. I haven't had a chance to really look under the hood much yet, but when I glanced around, I didn't see any noticeable leaks and there was no big puddle under the truck. Goulds vacuum pump kit was installed over the summer by my shop, so that should be go to go. My question is what exactly should I be looking for when I dig into this? If there are no leaks and the fluid is full, I am assuming there is a plug somewhere or the PS pump is shot... is there a surefire way to tell if the pump is any good? I have a new borgeson gear box waiting to be installed when my steering brace comes in, so I may just replace the pump anyways to be sure... but lets say I replace the pump, how can I identify any other problems or determine where the plug up is?
  11. I'm looking into winter fronts right now actually. I have a stainless steel chimney cap I may cut up and screw on there, unless I find a decent cheap one to purchase. I'll head out and plug it in right now...
  12. I have seen the block heater plug sticking out, just never needed it... and I'm not sure if that would help or not? Everything under the hood for the fuel pressure is right around the driver side battery.
  13. Now that I think of it, I installed a T fitting in the fuel line and one of those adjustable valves to stop the hammer affect on my Edge sensor... maybe the fuel is still too thick to get an accurate reading... because the truck was actually running very smooth when I started it. But like I said, the fuel pump was humming like crazy earlier... I could hear it over the motor... at least I believe it was the pump, don't know what else would hum like that.
  14. I went to Pep Boys, Kmart and Walmart and only could come up with the arctic Dieselkleen formula. I put a little extra in than what your're supposed to. Bumped the starter about 5 times, then started it for about 5 seconds just to see what the pressure was like... 0 PSI... now I'm worried. I sincerely hope I did not damage my almost brand new VP today in the short minute or so it ran. I JUST replaced that along with the majority of my fuel system not even a year ago. Honestly, I do not think I will fork over the money again. If it gets messed up from this I may just have to shut the truck for awhile and store it away. Fingers crossed...I think I might wait til friday or saturday to even start it again since it will be around 40 and 50 degrees.
  15. I think I should be good then. The AirDog isn't even a year old yet. Maybe 5000 miles on it. I will have to take the Camaro out and get some fuel treatment then. I'm not sure how well the fuel is treated here. Below freezing temps are not normal here so I'm sure the stations didn't compensate enough either. I always use the same Turkey Hill to fill up so I suppose I could find out if I wanted to... I don't mind keeping a treatment in the fuel all winter long though just to play it safe since the weather here is pretty inconsistent. Today is feeling like below zero, but this weekend is supposed to shoot up to the low 50's.
