  1. i'm not sure about the exact amount of movement in it but it's definitely more than any of the other arms on the intake valves....it's so much play that when i move it forward it closes the gap & i can't even move the feeler gague so i can only imagine what was happening after the truck warmed up. definitely don't think this is normal. i'm not a mechanic but I am thinking about attempting this repair myself & replacing the parts. It looks like I will need a new intake rocker arm & new rocker shaft to fix the problem. It's just the no.6 intake. Do you think this is a good idea for me to attempt this myself or is this more of a difficult repair than I imagine? --- Update to the previous post... but if i set the valve lash at .010 on the intake & then when it's moved to the opposite side & the tolerance changes so much that the feeler gague can't be moved that doesn't really seem right to me......
  2. Well, I pulled the cover again & checked everything over again very carefully. What I found was that there is a little more side to side movement of the back rocker arms on both intake & exhaust (no.6)???? just slightly a little more than the others when i check the valves on BDC. I'm not really too sure if there is anything that can be adjusted to fix that....I'm pretty sure that this is the noise that i'm able to hear from inside the cab especially since no.6 is right by the firewall....The rocker arm assembly bolts are both tight on intake & exhaust & lash is set correctly, but they just seem to move slightly side to side....they will make a slight popping sound if you move the rocker arms fast from side to side....the others make a little noise when you move the rocker arms side to side but not as noisy as back two..don't know if i should just live with the noise or i need to check on getting it fixed.... --- Update to the previous post... i'm pretty sure it hasn't gotten to that point yet....hopefully.....it looks like it's just side to side movement of rocker arms making some excessive noise....i don't really like hering it though... --- Update to the previous post... This problem is all starting to come together & make sense now. I always wondered why this started out happening when the truck would warm up. It progrssively got worse & i could hear the tick when the truck was warm or cold. I noticed that when I moved the rocker arm side to side movement that the valve lash was changing. It was totoally out of tolerance when moved to one side & ok when moved to the other side. I think I'm just going to park it & not run it before I tear something up. I'll order the parts to fix it. I'm just wondering if it's going to take a whole new rocker arm for intake & the rocker shaft or if it's only one other the other. I guess I'll order both so I don't get stuck not being able to fix the problem. Anybody know if it's a good idea to order these kind of parts from wholesalemopar.com or if i should get them from a better place? Anybody had this sort of thing happen on these engines. It's driven me crazy for the past couple of years.
  3. Thanks for the the help guys. I am going to try to pull the cover again and check it out. I will post how it goes.I was just wondering about something. I know somewhere I have seen something about that part of the engine is more susceptible to heat problems? Something about heat buildup under load because exhaust not being able to get out properly? Does that sound familiar to anyone? I'm guessing this only happens under real high EGT's. I've never had any problems with overheating but I was just wondering if this could have anything to do with my problem?
  4. sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you check the rocker arms on these engines & make sure that they are tight....i'm hoping maybe it's loose rocker arm....i sure hope it isn't a bent push rod.....i don't really know how that could have happened.... --- Update to the previous post... sorry, took a look at the service manual & think I have my answer about tightening rocker arm assembly.
  5. no, i haven't tightened the rocker assembly. I guess I should take the cover off & take another look at it. I didn't do too much except try to do a valve adjustment on the no.6 since it's such a pain to get to.
  6. I have pulled my valve cover about 3 times in the past several months trying to track down where a ticking noise is coming from. I think I have narrowed the tick down to the very back no.6 exhaust valve. I don't think it's normal to be able to hear this sort of ticking from inside the cab when applying the gas. I noticed this tick around 25,000 miles on the truck & right now it only has a little under 40,000.This last time that I pulled the valve cover I found the valve to be out of adjustment & so I tightened it up. Before I adjusted it I pulled up and down on the rocker I was kind of surprised but there seemed to be a small amount of movement between the rocker arm & the push rod???? I didn't really think that it should be possible though with the nut being tight....The tick seems to have quieted a little after I adjusted it but I'm still worried there may be something wrong. The tick can only be heard when applying the gas lightly when going up a grade or starting out from a stop.....seems to have to do with rpm & load on the engine....i don't hear anything unnusual when the truck is just idling.....Anybody experience a similar problem like this? Thanks.
  7. oh ok....so you basically have no choice on an 02 automatic if you want to get better performance....wonder if they did that to cut down on horsepower to save the tranny & not put as much stress on it? i've never had any transmission problems....hopefully never will...
  8. i'm not really talking about a big noticeable power increase....just a little....i've just heard that some people who have put those CFM+ intakes on the 2nd Gen's have noticed a small increase in power because of better air flow.....i know it probably wouldn't be worth it unless you were planning on putting a better exhaust in..... i ran one of those K&N filters for about 500 miles....I noticed that the truck was more responsive.....i took it out after i found out it wasn't filtering out the dirt......... --- Update to the previous post... is this the case with all the HY35 turbo's or is it just some of them.....it seems like i remember there being a difference between the 6-speeds & the automatics or something?
  9. Thanks for info....It does make sense that it would help the engine be able to breathe easier with these filters....I wonder how much increase you would see if you did the BHAF & put a larger intake manifold on?......
  10. the one thing i thought made the biggest difference in the ride quality of these trucks were the coils....i couldn't believe how different the truck handled after replacing the factory coils....I tried some of the KORE VR coils first & they were alright....i thought they were a bit stiff for these trucks.....I think Carli coils are the best....I couldn't believe the difference in the ride quality after putting on the Carli coils.....
  11. I've always been a little worried about using other air filters besides the Fleetguard filters made for the factory air box.....Especially after reading some of the stories of people posting how a lot of the performance air filters were bad & would shorten the life of the engine.....I had a K&N in for just a short time & I noticed there was an increase in power, but went back to the Fleetguard after hearing that the K&N didn't provide good air filtration.....After seeing the writeup here on Mopar1973Man's website for the BHAF I was thinking about installing one of these.....I was just wondering how good the air filtration is compared to the stock filters? Does the BHAF give in increase in performance or help with the EGT's? Are there any of these filters that are better than the other such as Wix or Fleetguard?
  12. Adding the 2-stroke oil did seem to quiet the engine down some. You guys are right about the valve adjustment too. The ticking noise is coming from the top end of the motor....i can almost hear it right underneath the valve cover....i haven't pulled the cover off to check them....i got to get a feeler gauge first....weird thing is that this truck has 40,000 miles on it.....i've seen where some people said in DTR forums that they had to do theirs way earlier too, but i think it was mostly on the 3rd gens.....hopefully the ticking will go away after the adjustment....Thanks for the help.....
  13. That's good....was there a way you could tell from the outside that it was the updated cover or did you have to remove it to find out?
  14. thanks for the info. i was just a little worried after looking into it.....it would be nice to know how many engines actually had a KDP problem out of all the 01's & 02's manufactured......kind of a crappy thing to happen to your engine.... i think i may have seen that one that you are talking about that had the problem on DTR forums..... I just got to thinking after I read a post where someone said they did the KDP fix on their 02 & they claimed that it had moved some & theirs didn't have the updated cover.....wish there was a way to know if an engine had the updated cover just by looking at the front of the engine.....seems like the odds are pretty good that the problem doesn't happen with the 02's though.....
  15. I was just wondering if it's important to worry about the KDP problem on 2002 models? I know they say that some have an updated case cover that fixes the problem & others don't have the fix.....Is the KDP problem very common on 02' models? I purchased mine new in May of 2002 & was just wondering if there is any way to know at all if it has an updated timing case cover?
  16. Sorry about not replying for a long time....I guess I don't have my account setup where it emails me when the thread has comments.... I live in Alabama.....The temperature rarely ever gets below 25 F at night.....I'm not really sure I even need to worry about plugging in my block heater.....I don't keep it in a garage right now....Just on a concrete driveway.... The truck has just been used as a daily driver for several years & I know that many times I've just shut my engine down after only running a couple of miles going back and forth to work.....Past couple of weeks I've been taking a longer route to work & making sure that the temperature gets up & the coolant starts flowing some.....I was just worried that maybe it could be causing some buildup in the engine by not getting it hot often enough....I've taken it out a few times & given it a good thrashing (not abuse) on the highway.... I still notice the ticking noise at times....So far I've only ran about half a tank of diesel with the 2-stroke oil in it.....Ticking noise is hard to explain & I really can't even tell sometimes where it's coming from, but i'm fairly certain it's engine related.....I seem to even notice it now sometimes on cold starts & not after it warms up.....oh well....
  17. Thanks for the info. That's pretty much what I thought might happen.....The only good thing is that I've always maintained the truck real well.....It never sees 3000 miles before the oil is changed. All the maintenance has pretty much been done using the severe duty schedule....I guess I just need to try start taking the long way to work so the truck stays happy....hahaaahaaa
  18. So, I know that these trucks were not designed to just be making trips to the supermarket & back home every day, but I have a truck that basically has just been used as a daily driver all its life. The truck got used once to tow a trailer from Oregon to Alabama & that was the most work it has seen in its entire life.....Basically, right now, I am using the truck to drive back and forth to work every day.....The problem is that I live so close to my shop that most of the time the truck never even gets up to normal operating temperature from the time that its started till it is shut down. What I'm wondering is if this is bad for the engine over time to not get it up to normal running temps when it is driven a lot of the time. I've just recently been trying to get the truck out on the interstate two or three times a week & getting on it pretty good & getting rpm's up to work the engine some.....It seems to have helped in getting rid of a little ticking noise I could hear after the truck was warming up a little....Could this cause some problems that the engine doesn't get up to normal temps every time it is driven back & forth to work? I just know that these engines were designed to be worked a little to stay happy.....
  19. Thanks!!!...I guess I'm safe....I don't think it's going to get that cold where I live....
  20. I'm not sure about the valve adjustment just yet. This truck does not have many miles on it at all just yet, but I don't think it would hurt anything to check it....I went and got some 2-stroke oil last night & i'm going to try that first & see how it sounds after it gets warmed up.... --- Update to the previous post... i just wondered about one other thing....is it totally safe to run the 2 stroke oil in the diesel during the winter when temps get down fairly low?
  21. sure....i will post how it goes after running it a couple of days....hopefully it will quiet it down a little.... i don't mind the noise....i love the sound of a cummins diesel.....i've actually heard that the 2001 and 2002 have the loudest engines out of all the years...... --- Update to the previous post... thanks....so, it's not recommended to use the ratio they show in the chart -- 200:1? i should use a 128:1 ratio instead?
  22. sorry about that....i just noticed the mixing ratio in the chart....i think i'm going to start using the 2-cycle instead of using the stanadyne...
  23. thanks for the replies....i may go out to wal-mart tomorrow and see if i can find some of the 2 cycle tc-w3.....i've heard of doing this, but i have just never tried it.....i've just always used power service or stanadyne......if you have a 35 gal tank is it recommended to put a quart in for a full tank or do you put in less?thanks...mike
  24. thanks guys. i appreciate the help. i guess i will start looking into adjusting the valves soon....i was mainly running the stanadyne for the benefits of lubrication of the fuel system.....i was worried that maybe there might be a leak or crack somewhere in exhaust system.....if there was a leak or crack in the exhaust mainfold would you hear the ticking constantly & not just after it warms up?
  25. Lately I've started to notice what sounds like a slight tapping after my engine gets up to normal temperature. It's a very light tap & hard to hear but you can definitely hear it when you listen closely....Sometimes it even sounds like a clock ticking fast when driving normally.....Only thing I know that I have changed the last month or so is that I've been running Stanadyne Performance formula in my diesel....Is this an exhaust valve or something that I'm hearing?
