  1. I've seen a million of these guage install forum posts and I hate to start another one but Im kind of partial to this forum and the diesel truck site forum. I have a boost guage, fuel pressure guage, trans temp guage and an EGT guage. Its going in my 98 24 valve (which isnt running yet because Im waiting for my VP44 and lift pump). Im just looking for pointers here and there. things to do and not to do...etc. Just little tricks that people have learned over the years - - - Updated - - - Thanks for your help stodge73...you always seem to pull through for me....lol
  2. What ever came of this? Hows it running? I gotta rebuild mine or get a new one and i was considering the HO. also the ISB pump
  3. Im so overwhelmed with this diesel stuff. Ive only had the truck for a little under 2 years and I just dont know that much about it. It seems like everyone has a different idea of whats the "best" or will last the "longest". Im not looking for massive HP advances or anything like that its mainly a daily driver and I occasionally tow a 28' gooseneck trailer. So far the best price I got on a VP is 970.00 shipped and Im pretty sure Im going to have to bite the bullet on that one because Im pretty sure my pump is shot. But people are mentioning lift pumps, and lower michron filters and big line kits and everyone has their own opinion on what the best lift pump is. I dont really know what to do.
  4. Alot of helpfull information. Sounds like I have some mods to do once I get a new VP. As of right now I have no lift pump. I have the module in the tank and the VP. Any wallet friendly suggestions would be greatly appreciate since I have to spend a grand on a pump now....lol
  5. Im fairly certain my VP44 took a big ol' dump on me the other day and now I have to spend a grand on another one. Im trying to troubleshoot so that I dont have to spend ANOTHER grand on a pump.It seems to me that the main issue with these pumps going bad is the fuel not being cooled enough and the pump and/or electronics overheat. So would it be a good idea to either:A. Coil the fuel line up after the filter housing (kind of looking like brake lines by a master cylinder) before it goes into the VP.orB. run the fuel lines through some sort of a small oil or tranny cooler mounted in the front somewhere after the filter housing but before the VP.Am I WAAAAY off base here? any thoughts?
  6. I have 15 psi at the fuel filter canister. I opened injectors 1,2,3 and 4. The third injector flowed the most but it looked like alot of air. They all trickled a little bit but nothing to speak of. I forgot to pull the codes but I will get those tomorrow
  7. Ive got a 24 valve 98 and I was driving down the road and I heard what sounded like a "pop" in my stacks and my truck died. It bounced around at a couple hundred RPM's before it died but NO response from the pedal at all. My truck has the fuel pump in the tank and the vp44 and thats it. No motor mounted lift pump. I have plenty of fuel up to and after my fuel filter canister but nothing coming out of the vp44. I pulled the very first injector line off but I have no fuel at all there. I THINK my vp44 took a ____ on me and Im in a real bad place right now. I cant afford a grand for a pump. Is there a way to test it and make sure it IS in fact the vp44 before I buy one? It will run on ether and thats it.Also, how do I know if that APPS is bad?
  8. yea one of us is always sitting in the truck watching the guages. I probably wont get to work on it again until wed or thurs. Ill let ya know what I find
  9. thats quite interesting. I love this site. You guys are Cummins geniuses....lol. I just need one of you guys to be living near NE Ohio to help me with MY current problems
  10. jag, iI have to agree with you. I have a feeling its 1 stupid wire scrfewing with me. wiring in aftermarket custom guages sounds like a cool idea but the problem would still exist considering those guages would still have to be powered from and information sent from the same place with a broken wire (possibly)
  11. Ive heard people mention before in reference to "high idle" is there a way to set the truck so that it idles high while you warm it up in the morning or are you guys just pressing the gas pedal slightly?when I used to drive truck I drove an International 4900 and if I set the cruis control while ideling it would idle up until I hit the brake. Kind of a cool feature. Just wondering if maybe my dodge does this and I dont know it
  12. Ok guys, Just an update. Im still having the same issue with my cluster. All the plugs and pins in the ECM and PCM look like brand new. I did however find out today that on some of these dodge rams depending what codes are tripped with the check engine light coming on sometimes you have to clear certain codes before others. My buddy who is a really good mechanic and has been working with me on this just found this out from a buddy of his at the dealer while he was working on another ram with similiar problems. Anyone ever heard of this? Im hoping to get it to the dealer this week and try it.
  13. well as of right now my OBDII port sometimes works and sometimes doesnt. Or I would do that. Plus the mechainic I have working with me has the Snap on reader. Not sure which one but it should read it but like I said that OBDII port isnt responding as it should --- Update to the previous post... also, i know a guy at my dealership and he has no prob giving me stuff like that but they have no listing for the cluster wiring diagram for the 98 24valve........wth?? im also hoping thatsomeone has the diagram for the wiring to the back of the truck (tail, turn, license plate light and brake lights)
  14. well I checked the pins as best as I could and didnt find anything but Im going to detach the fuel filter housing so I can get behind it easier. ALSO, Ive noticed my powersteering keeps freezing up on me at night.....WTH is that all about?? Its cold here but Im sure theres other places that are much colder. Is there some sort of additive or maybe certain fluid I should use. --- Update to the previous post... well, they guy you told me to get ahold have said he has no clue about it.....I priced out an ECM and even with my buddys discount its still 1400.00....wth???? --- Update to the previous post... ok, so my local dealership sucks. I need the REAL wiring diagram for the cluster on my truck.
  15. When this all started it was very random. I hadnt done anything to it but drive it. Ive had the truck for 1 1/2 years before it starting having this issue. The truck is pretty much stock. The only additions are the stacks and they removed the lift pump and put the pump in the tank. That was all done way before I got it and had never had any problems with it. Until recently we had never done anything to the truck but drive it, change the oil, tranny service...etc typical maintenance. I guess Im wondering how the heck im supposed to test the ECM? if you do a basic search on the net for ecm OR pcm it brings up the PCM everytime. Even Cardone has no clue what theyre talking about. I work at Auto Zone and when I call them and ask them about it they say "oh you mean the box on the firewall, thats the ECM".......NO ITS NOT!!!!!.....lol and they do this for a living!!! Im supposed to trust that theyll send my customers the right parts??....they have screwed us soooo many times and then the customer thinks its our fault.....ugh. Anyway, off my soap box now.....any ideas how to test it? I will check the pins and make sure they are all snapped it. That seems pretty usefull and logical....thank you
  16. anyone know for sure if I used someone elses ECM (on the block) from another 98 24v cummins qc 4x4 truck if it would hurt their ecm?
  17. well Ive got a buddy that has a 1998 just like me and his doesnt match mine either...lol we have 12v, 5v and grounds in different spots thats whats making this so confusing
  18. well the other wiring diagrams ive gotten from here have helped and are certainly WAY more helpfull then the diagrams from the dealership.......Thank you --- Update to the previous post... Is this the diagram for the 2 plugs behind the cluster that the cluster plugs into? that one seems to be tough from the dealership because it seems like every year is different
  19. Ill pull the codes again tomorrow but I did not have a 606 code. Im glad to hear im correct on the ecm/pcm thing I just dont understand why soooo many places have NO CLUE. for all the auto parts stores Ive checked if I say ecm or pcm they refer to the pcm only (on firewall) Including cardone......lol Anyway, I believe my problem lies with the ECM or wires going to it. --- Update to the previous post... my codes are 920, 921 and 999 which is no signal from ecm and no pulse signal. I think I got a bad connection somewhere at my ECM (side of the motor)
  20. I pulled the codes but I dont know how many of them are legit to be honest. I sent the box on the firewall (PCM?) to cardone and they said it was fine. The problem is my truck has a PCM and an ECM and unfortunately everyone thinks its the same thing. I got a wireing diagram from the dealership for my cluster but theyre talking about pin 32 and a box having 50 pins but the one on the firewall has 3 seperate plugs with around 30 pins each.......????????
  21. Ive got a buddy with the same exact truck. I tried his cluster and it did the same thing. I also did the cluster check on mine and the guages worked as they should for the test just not any other time. I would really like to get another harness I just dont want to spend 200.00+ dollars on something that may or may not work.
  22. I have the above mentioned truck. The ONLY guage that works is the tach. I sent the ECM to cardone to be R&R and they sent it back saying it was fine. I obviously have some sort of wiring issue but weve literaly been tracing wires and making sure theres grounds and 5 volt references and 12 volts....etc for a few months now. Any typical places where a wire might have broken? Any other ideas what might be wrong? Im also looking for a wiring diagram for the wires behind the guage cluster. Those 2 square plugs that the guage cluster plugs into.Any help would be fantastic
