No Power Steering and Soft Brakes

Recommended Posts

Was driving home and lost my power steering and brakes. Fluid spewing out of the reservoir cap. Replaced the P/S Pump, and bled the system of all the old fluid, replaced with new PS Fluid. Bled the system with the front end on jack stands, turning lock to lock over 100+ times, filling the reservoir as needed. Still no power steering and squishy brakes. All my lines are free and clear of blockage. The new P/S pump was making a *woowoowoowoo*noise with the pickup running and cap off, would go away when cap was put back on. I have ZERO leaks anywhere on the system.

It can be two different things.

  1. Power steering pressure is not high enough or
  2. Brake booster leaking by internally to return.

Power steering pressure not high enough.  the pump is driven by a coupling on the end of the vacuum pump.  Sometimes this will fail.  Did you look at it closely?   This would show up really quickly with a pressure test.   The other possibility is the new ps pump is bad or the pressure regulator on the PS pump is bad.

The hydraulic fluid pressure goes to the brake booster then feeds the power steering.   remove the return line from the PS pump reservoir that is from the brake booster.  if there is more than just a little bit of flow there (and you are not using the brakes) your problem resides in the brake booster.   (in a perfect world there should be no flow from brake booster until you press and release the brakes.)
