Someone gave me a copy of Amsoil Cetane Booster additive and a question popped  up. I have read in the past that the cetane rating should be about 50 in grade 2 for a good performance. In the past I read ULSD is more towards 40 to 45. I have yet to hear of anyone using this Amsoil Cetane booster, let alone the actual results of it's use.

Had anyone used it ?

What did you fine out ?

I plan on a 5k round trip early next year and was thinking of trying it for my 1st time. Could same me money or problems if someone knows my answers. Any help ?

As far as ASTM guide states...

The ASTM Standard Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils (D-975) states, "The cetane number requirements depend on engine design, size, nature of speed and load variations, and on starting and atmospheric conditions. Increase in cetane number over values actually required does not materially improve engine performance. Accordingly, the cetane number specified should be as low as possible to insure maximum fuel availability."

Higher the cetane the lower the BTU's. So basically in a nutshell higher the cetane lower the MPG's. Just like winter time the cetane goes up here and the MPG's go down.

Smaller higher revving diesels..........like in Europe..............often require a higher cetane level.  About the only time I can see this additive being beneficial is in really cold weather.................higher cetane fuel ignites quicker/faster.

high cetane is typically need for cold morning starting. When normal compression heat isn't enough to ignite the fuel. Typically sub zero weather. The only other time high cetane is use is for racing when you twisting like 4k and better.

Normal daily driver not required.
