I've been wanted to get one for general use but not wanting to spend a lot. Present vehicles are the 01 Dodge, 87 Cirrus, 12 Hundai... With HF, never pay list price... got it on sale for $50. I'm willing to look up codes on line. After the stealership read my codes, charged me for it & then said "there weren't any"... I decided I needed to read my own codes.

That should work for you. Just make sure to get a good error code list for each vehicle. Typically people get into trouble just looking at a generic error code list and could be very mis-leading. Even worse when the scan tool has the generic text definitions. I rather have the P number and look up each vehicles service manual and know Dodge's definition vs. Hyundai definitions.

Thanks, that's good advise... especially on the cheaper units. I'm up to my eyeballs in papers needed to do my taxes... when I get that behind me, I want to just try it in my vehicles.
