APPS TPS failure expectation
Thanks, my main question was will a new TPS flat fail, or can I keep resetting if I need to. I'm already half way into my trip. I bought the Napa as I was pulling a horse trailer for a backcountry packing trip at the time it started acting up.

APPS TPS failure expectation
Hey folks I got a low voltage code and replaced the TPS APPS with spring etc from Napa. I did not adjust it, tonight I got some cutting out on the highway. I've saw the description for diagnostic on alternator, ECM, etc. My question is should I worry about needing to drive 200 miles tomorrow hauling a light trailer? I have my four year old with me and want to make sure it will likely be annoying not catastrophic. We stopped and I pulled the battery cables and turned the key, reset apps and got no more cutting out the last hour of our drive tonight. Thanks

Hard start when hot/sitting
The engine would turn over and crank and didn't even seem that slow when it was hot and eventually start. That's why I originally assumed it was VP44. It wasn't until I put on a new starter that I realized how much zippier it was than the old wore out one.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Seems pretty good, We had a little fire pop up on the forest I work on, so had to postpone our pack trip till we get it under wraps, but so far so good. Definitely fires up real quick with the new starter.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Yep starting well, can't replicate the problem. Need to get it nice and hot tonight and double check.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Pulled the starter figured out how to work the bench tester at O'Reilly since the staff couldn't. Worked but sounded like bad bearings, got a new one at NAPA, and now can't replicate the hard start. I wish I had time to rebuild mine, but needed it solid as we are going packing in central Nevada Friday. Thanks for the advice!

Hard start when hot/sitting
Yeah appreciate the info. Definitely frustrating as I need the truck Friday for a packing trip I've already paid for. That link is great.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Thanks, I rebuilt the starter solenoid with a LarryB's Dodge Cummins Denso Starter solenoid kit 4 years ago. Batteries were new AGMs, but my kid turned on the interior light and when I took them in to get charged, they just gave me new ones 6 months ago. I will check that stuff though, maybe the starter needs a full overhaul. Also did new battery cables recently. Ran the codes, got P1693 last night, P0380 and P0382 using my EDGE. Ran it on the scanner at Orielly's this morning and got two codes each for P0380 and P0382. Filled the tank, no big difference. Can still turn off hot truck, let it sit 15 seconds and then get hard start.

Hard start when hot/sitting
I'll give this one a try this morning. It's at a little below 3/4, which is more like 1/2 a tank. I know because I once ran out of fuel with 1/8 in the tank and had to walk three miles to a ranch while elk hunting... This morning with the rear wheels sitting on paving stoves it started up perfectly.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Copy, This likely has 200k on the vp44. Has code P1693, I'll have to get it checked to see what the companion code is in the AM. Anyone that's experienced a VP 44 going out know what kind of timeline it usually has? I'm going on a trip Friday I need the truck probably about a 200 mi each way towing a light two horse trailer.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Thanks John I'll throw some paving stones under the rear wheels tonight. seems like the hard start is becoming ubiquitous whether it's sitting or right after it's gotten hot. Not sure if it would hard start after just sitting for a minute when it's not at full temp.

Hard start when hot/sitting
Hey folks, I've got a hard start issue that started when I pulled off the interstate in 115 degree heat. Almost always has a hard start if the engine is warmed up and sits a couple minutes now. Sometimes it will hard start if sitting overnight. The first time was 1k miles after a fuel filter change on a road trip from Vegas to southern Idaho, but I did the standard bump the pump and it ran great after that. I can't see any fuel leaking anywhere. I've always seen a little drip off the tank if I really top it off, but that's been the case since I bought it. I just ordered a DDRP from FASS, but haven't installed it. I'm driving a loop from Vegas>Oregon>Idaho.Vegas in a month with a small horse trailer and a couple pack llamas in it. What's a good way to test the fuel system before hand? Once I had a pump I could run off a battery and traced an air leak to a cracked pickup in the tank with a clear hose that way, but alas no more pump. I know this truck has at least one stock style lift pumps and a upgraded VP44. it normally runs 13psi at idle and 9 PSI cruising, can go down to 7 WOT, hence the DDRP. Any chance I could be having an o-ring problem with the fuel filter that took a thousand miles to show up? I snugged it down with a one and a quarter inch socket. Thanks folks,

Trans Coolant Line Return Question
Hey folks searched on here but didn't find the answer I was looking for, most likely user error. About to install an auxiliary trans cooler with fan under the bed, mostly for slow 4x4 driving. I live in Nevada and it gets hot. I've got a Mishimoto replacement cooler up front. I drew three hunt tags here in Nevada and with 333K on the clock I want to help it out a bit. I wanted to double check that the return line on the transmission is the rear line as it attaches to the transmission, correct? #3 in this image. Thanks in advance, Adam

Overheating Transmission on 4x4 long climbs Aux Cooler?
I don't know if I've run it in third but I've definitely run it in 4lo with overdrive off. I'm probably going under 5 mph the whole way up.

Overheating Transmission on 4x4 long climbs Aux Cooler?
Not that I'm aware of, I know it got a rebuild with an upgraded TC. I'm hesitant to do trans work because I'm sure that mine has at least 100k on it. Hoping to do everything at one time. Any idea on the general cost for valve body work? I'll look into the lockout, I'd just have to make the switch a missile type launch cover so my wife doesn't accidentally flip it.

Overheating Transmission on 4x4 long climbs Aux Cooler?
Hey folks need advice on how effective adding a aux trans cooler will be to keeping my trans temps in check, I bought my 2001 with 300k from my uncle in law. He was the original owner and always serviced it at my father in law's shop. I only using for hunting, camping and occasional trailer hauling trips. I'm a park ranger in Nevada and love backcountry hunting, climbing, mountain biking etc... My favorite spot involves a 45+ minute climb in 4LO to get up a series of switchbacks from 5500' to 8000'. The transmission, and eventually the motor gets hot. Trans 225+ motor 210. Juice will read the temp sensor I installed in the transmission on passenger side (I know it's not ideal) but also a factory reading that's often 5 degrees hotter, so I run the hotter reading on my gauges. I pulled the radiator, trans cooler, evaporator when I first got it and cleaned it as it was gunked up and extended the blow by hose below the axle. I've replaced the water pump, thermostat (190), and coolant. I also just replaced the trans cooler with a mishimoto one. On the highway in Vegas I run 156 degrees on the trans, maybe 165 up a hill. The trans would also get hot in 100 degree Vegas just idling for a long time (waiting at the dump). I also replaced the fan clutch twice, once with a cheapo, then with a better brand to be more confident. It hasn't been hot since the new trans cooler, but I'm thinking of adding a fan aux cooler. I'm getting pack llamas this year and will be hauling a small stock trailer often on rough and slow roads, as well as a stock rack for really rough areas. I'm a backpack hunter so need to get to the wilderness trailhead, then hike in and camp. Looking forward to llamas hauling 80 pounds each for me and not packing elk out solo anymore! I've got a big front bumper I'd love the mount the trans cooler in the hole where a winch once was to keep the lines short, but can do the under the bed as well. My question is, how much difference should I expect from the aux cooler going slow over a long period of time? I love this truck and since I only put 8k miles a year would love to run it for a long time.
