Turbo Trouble???

Recommended Posts

I have a mostly stock cummins. Only plan on upgrades that increase reliability and efficiency.

Had my air filter off today and have been monitoring an oily buildup on the intake side of the turbo. I can now feel lateral movement on the turbo shaft. Figure I am needing a solution. Any reason to upgrade my turbo? Is a rebuild kit and self rebuild a feasible job for us backyard mechanics? Send it off for rebuild? Buy a rebuilt unit?

I don't spend money on bling, so just looking for a cost effective yet long term solution. :thumb1:

Some lateral movement is ok. There is a write up on the turbo in the articles section.http://articles.mopar1973man.com/2nd-generation-24v-dodge-cummins/24-air-system/122-turbo-inspection I have never rebuilt one but it does not look difficult to me.

I would however leave any advise on a rebuild to those more knowledgeable than I.
