Posted August 17, 200915 yr Hello. I changed the pinion bearing on my 1999 dodge 2500 cummins. and i put back the shims that has been there. and if i tighten the pinion nut it will not turn. My question is if all the shims was put back in place and i over tightened the pinion nut should the pinion still turn? or i have to have it torqued right? I dont have a 500 torque wrench. or should i buy a shim (between the yoke and outer bearing?. I need to fix my diff in2 days the garage will be used after that. thanks in advance for any help. espanton@telusplanet.net
August 19, 200915 yr i believe the dana's use a "crush sleeve". it is only good for one use! and you should have changed it also.when you torq the nut down you want to use a rotational torque wrench(NOT the click type).the crush sleeve is a one shot thing and sets the preload on the bearings.
August 19, 200915 yr i have heard someone say you can mark the nut and if you can get it back EXACTLY than you don't need a new c/sbut when i asked my grandpa(ASE certified) he said that was a bad idea
August 20, 200915 yr i think you over tightened i found this in a google search: http://www.shop.ryevalleygear.com/categ ... egoryId=36 about 3 down is "Crush Sleeve 1132"

September 3, 200915 yr honestly i was scared, but the tv show EXTREME4X4 showed 2 really detailed episodes. they showed it takes patients but it's not rocket science. unlike transmissions but thats another story
