While replacing the tranny lines took a closer look @ front rotors! Sever heat stressed & cracked. Q?s I believe the original rotors & Hubs non ABS. So Take hub & rotor off @ same time by the socket on back of hub bolts & use power sterring to press off? Seperate both once off truck & press out wheel studs? On the new hub & rotor, can the rotor be mounted on hub for easy removal of ROTOR only for future replacement i.e. anti sieze all hub & rotor mating surface & hub to axel surface? What are the best hub & rotors for Tow/Hall aplication, tempkin & drilled/slotted zink coated rotors... NAPA premium H&R ....or? Has anyone swaped out to later Generation 2nd, 3rd for easier disassasembly? Do the drilled rotors realy make the stops Shorter by noticably reducing break fade? I realy appreciate all the views & input, thanks Dave.

ISX will the 00-02 3500 4x4 hubs & rotors fit a 98 3500 4x4? if so order them WO ABS?

The 02 hub with studs already in AND a larger flange to hold free floating rotor on the front of it and ABS cable, both are are equal in H, W, & depth, same threds and and same spline pattern and demtions . The 2000 -2002 hubs mount to axel housing like the 98's BUT the rotor mount on the front, EASY rotor replacement. Looked @ both rotors side by side both equal width. the 02 is 1/4in taller. Q, will the 98 break caliper holders & calipers accept is slightly larger dia rotor? will the rotor be set into/ over the axel and not allow the wheel to mount properly? thanks Dave

You may get lucky with the steering wheel trick pressing the wheel bearing out but be careful too much exertion and you can damage your booster. You should be able to rent a puller from Autozone or Advanced Auto or somewhere like that. Threads onto the wheel studs and pushes off the axle shaft. Once its off, you will have to press the wheel studs out, clean up the hub assembly while the rotor is off, and put the new rotor in place and press the wheel studs back in. Now would be a great time to grease your wheel bearings but the only way I know how to do that is through the abs sensor. So not sure how you could go about that....Use liberal amounts of Anti sieze when reassembling, youll thank yourself down the road if you ever have to take it back apart. Im running EBC drilled and slotted rotors and EBC brake pads and they are light years ahead of the oem stuff I replaced them with. The thing about slotted rotors is you have to use a quality brake pad that is recommended for use with a slotted rotor. Drilled and slotted rotors are designed to dissapate heat but they are also designed to build heat quicker than a solid rotor. The slots scrub the brake pads which put heat in the pads. Heat is what makes brake pads bite, which improves stopping power. but if youve got a pad thats not designed for the higher temps the pads will wear quickly and you will see brake dust all over your wheels. So if your going to buy a drilled and slotted rotor, make sure you buy the pads they recommend.As far as switching to the slip on rotors, the only way you will be able to do that is by swapping the axle out for a 00 - 02. The spindles are different, and you cant swap spindles out because the axle shafts arent the same length. Ive heard of people swapping out spindles from Ford axles of similar years because theyve got the lockout hubs and slip on rotors (I think). You would have to do some research to verify that. Probably not worth all the time and $$$ to do a swap, unless you plan on keeping the truck for a long time and then going to something with lock out hubs would be the sensible way IMO. Otherwise just sleeze the heck out of everything when you put it back together and it should come apart much easier next time.

Diesel4 thanks. looken @ the 98 hub non ABS on my rig & the 02 frm the part store. Got a little excited on the switch over. Yes the 98's have a 30 spline spindle axel & 00-02 have a 32. What about switchen out just the splined hub axels? Did read on pirate 4x4 about the 2nd gen to a ford hub swap, pretty cool, Short end of it, they took the whole Knuckle from BJ on from 92-96 F350 duley. Need a different pitch banjo bleed screw on caliper to mate with ram bk line. Wheel studs and pattern same as dodge.

As for the brake I never really got into all the mods with 3rd Gen rotors, slotted and drilled rotors, etc. The only thing I did was invest in a exhaust brake and never looked back. Wonderful part was no worries about get brakes hot because the exhaust brake s my first used brake then you supplement with the service brakes. So when I did my first brake job at 185K miles I barely had 0.010 turn off the OE rotors and only invested $170 or so into rebuilding the calipers and pads. What's wonderful is once you get use to the exhaust brake you find you rarely put your foot on the center pedal at all if you do its rare.

An exhaust brake is on the wishlist...along with a new set of injectors and a set of mirrors....I dislike these small mirrors especially with a trailer in tow but at the same time I cant bring myself to spend 400+ on a new set. Ive been holding out and scouring classifieds and salvage yards with no luck

I was talking to a driveline specialist about this subject yesterday. He told me the reason nobody does these swaps is because the 00-02 dana 60 axle is wider than the 98-99. He agreed that the 98-99 are more of a PITA to work on because of the pressed rotors, but said the outer spindle is a better design because the upper and lower ball joints are weight bearing and the 00-02 are not. He said he literallty sees twice the number of 00-02 trucks come in for ball joints than 98-99. This is just one mans opinion, but he has been in the driveline buisiness for 25 years and has owned his own shop for 10 years, so I imagine hes got a pretty good grasp on what works and doesnt. As for your original question rdsutton, he also touched base on the Ford outers swap and said that it the easiest and cheapest route if you want slip on rotors
