July 3, 201411 yr I was 10 years old when I heard my older brother talking about the new 1971 hemi cudas! We couldn't wait until WE were old enough to buy a new one, and the way the horsepower was going up in the late 60's and early 70's... who could say what the horsepower was going to be by the time we got our drivers license! ~ 1976 and 1978 respectively.. Then 1972 came. For the next 20 years, the only 'quick or fast' was stupid decals or spoilers that made a car look 'fast'. ...........remember the Cordoba/Charger....... uggg. Shoot, "THE" quickest vehicle in 1979 coming out of Detroit was the Lil Red Wagon! Vette owners were PISSED! These are exciting times for Dodge again... I just hope another 1972 isn't around the corner!
July 3, 201411 yr I remember well 1973 an 1974 , our 1st gas shortage had come about ,the dealer lots were filled with muscle cars and highway cruisers(rolling sofa cars) 7-9 passenger station wagons. So why did people panic over 50 cent a gallon gas , oh yeah they bought "small" cars Pinto , Vega , some Japanese cars a few German cars and for what 22 or 23 mpg. I had a full size 1968 Plymouth Fury III 318 2bbl carb. a/c p/s at 70 mph it got 16 mpg when the 55 speed limit was imposed it jumped to a 21 mpg car.
July 3, 201411 yr Owner Like myself I grew up with a 1973 Dodge Charger SE with a 400 CID rebuilt a 383 CID and then beefed up the trans and drove that car for over 300,000 miles when I sold it. I'm just waiting for something to come along and kill off the whole muscle car thing again it happen back with the oil embargo I'm sure it will happen again.
July 3, 201411 yr Author I personally never owned a mopar car but a lot of my high school classmates did and we had fun with them. I had a 1970 chevy Monte Carlo with factory 402 Big Block with 4bbl and 400th tranny and 3.30 rear gear ratio and that car was a lot of fun, rode beautiful and did 18 mpg running 65-70 down the interstate, It would break the tires loose when asked to even rolling at 50+ mph.
Chrysler finally came to play again and in a big way.
