95 12 valve busted gear case
Dieselfuture posted a topic in 2nd Generation Dodge 12 Valve Powertrain
So, buddy of mine that I work with got a 95, 4x4, auto supposedly built for pulling trailers , 220k 8' box, regular cab. Title says gas, also brake booster doesn't seem to be hydraulic like on mine, it's round like on a gas truck but no vacume lines going to it or place for it. Anyhow it was leaking oil out front someplace and guy that was selling it just got it and decided to sell it, so it's a cat in a bag. I looked at it with him and gave him my . For $2900 it seemed like it was fixable and drove ok accept it seems to shift to od too soon and when flored doesn't kick down and seems to be hunting lock unlock. Front cover was soaked and dirty, seller said it was front seal or so he was told that by po. I said right of way that it seems like oil is coming from top someplace but who knows could be flinging of the crank upwards. Now that he's working on it he found this, see picture. His question, how much is he looking at to fix crap inside assuming worst case scenario. I'll update pictures as he sends them to me. Trying to get him to join this site, but I think he's already thinking of selling it. Edit: all gears seem fine, pin is missing, in the oil pan I guess. How important is it to put new pin in, it it only for assembly and now that the case is in place it will be fine or? On the case it self I'm thinking jb weld? He feels better now that the gears look good. -
A question for all.I have recently heard of a potential problem on the older 5.9, 's that I am sure most of you know about, but it was news to me. There is a dowel pin under the front cover that can work out and tear up the gears in the fron of the motor? And I understand the easy fix, I quess my question is, Is this still a potential problem on the 2nd gen 24 valve motor? or has it been adderessed by Cummins? Thanks in advance for "clearing the air"

Is there a way to tell if my Killer Dow Pin has already been repaired with the KDP Kit?Were all Cummins 5.9 24V 1998.5 manufactured with the KDP problem?Did Cummins ever solve the KDP problem during assembly?Any information will be appreciated, this KDP issue could be a very expensive repair which worries me.

I was just wondering if it's important to worry about the KDP problem on 2002 models? I know they say that some have an updated case cover that fixes the problem & others don't have the fix.....Is the KDP problem very common on 02' models? I purchased mine new in May of 2002 & was just wondering if there is any way to know at all if it has an updated timing case cover?

Finally taking care of my KDP today. I've been aware of the KDP issues for quite a while and always convinced myself "it won't happen to me".After reading over the procedure a couple hundred times it finally seemed less intimidating and I decided to tackle it.Today I got down to the dowel itself and found it firmly seated in it's hole.Tomorrow I'll make the tab and reassemble. One concern is how to keep the engine from turning while torquing the dampener bolts.Any suggestions?John

I have a 96-24 valve motor, it has 300,00 miles on it and still runs great....but yesterday she started throwing oil out and over EVERYTHING....The timing cover is "cracked" they say the motor needs to come out to repair it???? $2700.00......don't sound right to me.Have any of you changed or repaired the timing cover on this motor? What could cause this condition? How bad of a job is it to change / repair?Where could I get a replacement cover? Is the timing cover on this motor steel or plasticMany thanks as always for your help. Randy

I hear the killer dowel pin is a hot topic again. So what's this about the 01's and some 02's
