98 3500 360 gas, swapping in a 95 12v, harness question

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm not having much luck finding info on this particular swap. I'm repowering my 98 3500 from a 360 gas to a 95 12 valve and I'm wondering if anyone else has any insight on the swap as far as wiring. I have the 95 engine harness with the ecm and I also have the headlight to dash harness for the 95 diesel which of course doesn't plug into the 98 dash harness. Would it be possible to wire the diesel ecm and engine harness into the 98 gas headlight to dash harness? What about swapping the connector from the 98 gas headlight to dash harness to the 95 diesel headlight to dash harness? Any ideas might help and would be much appreciated.

Transmission is an automatic 47rh, 241 hd transfer. I'm pretty much set to swap it over besides getting the dash hooked up. I'm trying to figure out if Dodge at least used the same colors on the wiring between 95 and 98, if so I could probably swap the 98 c134 connector in place of the 95 c133 connector. If not, omg, I will have to figure out which colors for which circuits on each truck. Unless there is a way to keep the 98 headlight to dash harness and wire in the ecm and engine harnesses, I'm not sure. If I hadn't overlooked the connector difference to begin with I would have gotten a 47re trans with a 98 computer and harness:spend:. Oh well, live and learn.

Can you be more specific? 2 computers and an extra harness? I'm interested in what you're saying, I'm just not following sorry.

My idea was to use the original 98 PCM for airbags , speedo, fuel level + 95 ecu for transmission and charging, yuo need only 3 signals to send to the 98 PCM : engine rpm. temp and oil pressure . Then I think your original 98 gauges should work. I think the hardest part will be figure what type rpm signal the original 98 V8 ECu needs. With temp and oil pressure is easyer, you can even add those two sensors from V8 to Cummins . I am bit similar situation with my 99 quad 12v Cummins project, its missing the original 24V engine an all undrerhood harness. I allready brought 99 underhod harness and PCM,but now I have to figure out will it be better to use '97 engine wiring harness and ECU/PCM or buy 98 24V harness with ECU and modify to use with 12V engine

Hang on a sec...:duh:

PCM only controls the Auto Transmission, fuel sender, and voltage regulator on the alternator.

ECM controls all the engine... Fueling, sensors, etc... Then sent out over CCD network...

http://articles.mopar1973man.com/2nd-generation-24v-dodge-cummins/26-engine-systems/74-ecm-engine-control-module

Airbag is a stand alone unit it only tie is the CCD network...

Instrument cluster recieves this information by CCD network....

Now remember pre 98 truck send gauge data directly to the instrument cluster...

Now I am confused.

Can you post 98 RAm 2500 wiring diagrams for 3 setup:

1. Gas V8
2. Cummins 12V - it have only one module the engine ECU (with PCM function?) or is PCM with temp/prssure sensors
3. Cummins 24V - it have2 modules engine ECU and PCM

MnTom, I thought of swapping the dash too, I'm kind of partial to the 98 dash so I figured I'd leave that as a last ditch option.AsTross, I hear what your saying but I want to keep the engine bay as neat as possible.Mopar, That diagram looks like a 24v so I assume that was relevant to AsTros' truck. In case this will help someone else, here's where I'm at. 98 The dash harness is the same part# gas or diesel, the same goes for the headlamp to dash harness. So I'm going to disconnect the 95 engine harnesses from the 95 headlamp to dash harness and see how it will wire into the 98 headlamp to dash harness. I will let you guys know what I find out.
