Help!-Brake Job Gone Wrong

Recommended Posts

Thanks so much for the kind words, dripley. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help of good guys like you and the others when you get in this sort of situation. Now there you go ruining my plan for getting done quickly!!!! ;) Ok, you're probably right. That means I pull the assemblies back out and see what I get. HEY! If I were to go and stick the hose up in that shaft while it was all put together, do you think it would SAFELY wash out those shaft tubes??? If I pull the assembly, how should I clean/polish/smooth that axle area where the seals have marked it up?? I could not find the spacers. I also didn't try real hard. The parts store told me that would be a part you have to get from the OEM. I know what that means! Cha-CHING! So I'll have to use the pieces, er, spacers that I do have. I am seriously considering searching the junkyards for a front axle and the other attachments to replace mine as I've had soooo much corrosion. I know that if I max this thing out(and I work construction for myself) that I will likely break something at some point. Any and all suggestions or insights on any of this is still appreciated.

Not trying to make your job any harder, like I said your assembly is more involved than mine was. the rotors jusr slip on. If it make you feel any better I left one of mine of too. the worst thing i left off was one of the support brakets for my speed sensor wires. The wire ended up rubbing on the wheel and now my abs light blinks occasionally. Just something else to fix. I dont know a good way to wash out the tubes. When i did mine i never gave it much thought. I did however take care not to drag the splined end across the bottom of the tube because i figured there would be dirt there. I just put them back in and they are leak free as far as I know a year later. You might try the hose thing after you get them in there. I dont think i would use high pressure tough, just flood them with lowe pressure water and let the crap float out. I dont that you can polish out the groove in your axle with out shrinking the diameter of the axle in that area and that might cause more problems. Someone else might know better than me. When i had mine out I never paid any attention to them. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. But like i said before, 1 year later and no problems. I could not find those inner dust cover at a junk yard and the dealer was the only place I could find them, but you could not buy just them. You had to buy them with another part and it was quite pricey. I never went o a junk yard and looked for them, just clled them on the phone.

I don't see any problem with taking a garden hose or something with a low pressure and washing out the tubes.. The seal is designed to keep stuff out, so I can't see why water would be a problem. As for the axle shaft, I would see if emery cloth with a fine grit would take out the groove. Depending on how deep it is...If you want, I can get you in touch with the local junkyard here for the parts. I'm going to see them for some stuff this Saturday and will ask them about the parts. 2 dust shields and 2 shims. Get the price and can post up here. If you want to order them, I can give you there number and they will ship them to you.

If you have a source for those little dust sheilds for the inside of the bearing I would love to know that. As iI remeber the dealer sold them with the steering knuckle and not seperately. could be wrong on the knuckle, but it did not come seperately and it cst alot of $$$.

Any update on this? Did you get this all together and running again?BTW, guys, I checked with the junkyard and they only carry the dust shields and shims as a complete unit with the axles. They were not willing to part with them...So, I tried... Good luck in the search for them? Makes me appreciate spraying mine with undercoat spray!Maybe its worth buying them new at she stealership...

The seals are actually designed to keep oil in, not keep much out. It doesn't take much pressure to push past a lip seal like an axle uses. If you are going to house out the tubes make sure you change your diff lube before you drive it to keep from stirring up the water that does get past the seals.
