Is it time for a new turbo?

I have less than a 1 to 2 mm of play side to side. No play in and out.

New noise sounds like a bad belt tentisioner. This happens when developing boost or decreasing boost. The sound is coming from where the turbo is located. It is building boost and running fine. It feels like the boost is coming on slower than normal but that could be in my mind.

Other than being filthy and showing signs of dirt erosion on the blade tips it looks ok otherwise. What are you running for an air filter? Does it spin freely or have any resistance while turning it?

Some autozone filter. I think stp as it is white. Very disappointed at the crud that made it past. Might as well have not been running an air filter.

Boost leaks can make a screaming sound as well. I'd start there if the blades on the compressor aren't touching the compressor housing.

You may have a warped air filter housing not letting the filter seal properly. Not an uncommon issue on 2nd gen air boxes. And to add to Tylers post time to check all the clamps from the turbo and make sure the hoses are not cut or slipped back a bit ect.

A wastegate does not make a sound like that. Also, if you could fill out your signature with your transmission that would be great!

 That is what we are trying to say, by checking all the hose clamps from the turbo to the intercooler all the way to the intake horn. It will cause a whistle or screach if there is a boost leak caused by a blown or loose hose or clamp.

The sound is like a turbo bark but for 20 second or so as the boost is increasing or decrrasing. My boots and intercooler are not leaking. Did a pressure test to 30 psi and it held air pressure.

A bark is not even close to what a bad tensioner sounds like.....

Grab the wastegate arm and see if it will move with just your hand. I guess it's possible the diaphragm went bad.

Sounds like boost blowing out of somewhere to me.....

Any advise where to start looking?

Maybe a boot with a somewhat loose clamp? Starts blowing boost out when it reaches a certain psi?

Tested all that. Built a pvc contraption that let me add air via air chuck. (Turned down to 30 psi. Then the other end I found a can of chili that fit perfect. Clamped them down and added air. Its all tight. I'm all stock and can get 19 psi of boost.

What do you mean other end?? You should let it blow the air into the engine. If you're stopping before the intake horn it could be blowing the air out of the intake horn / grid heater gaskets

I did stop it before the intake horn. The grid heater gasket seems too simple. I will be checking it as soon as the sun comes up. So another question for you. When I pressurize the intake side of the turbo will air hiss through the valves and out the exhaust? If not this idea is genius and could really set me on the right path.
