Only 2 Fires.............So Far

It's been really, really mild here so far this fall.  Temps in the 50-60's durning the day............dry...........sunny.................windy!!!  I've only lit the wood stove twice so far....................and only to really take the dampness out of the house.

How often do you guys clean your chimney?  Do you sweep it or burn a chemical log?

I'm going to sweep mine some time soon before the storms roll in. Then I'm typically good for the whole winter. If I burn the right wood at the right time I don't have much issues. Seriously cold temp will cause a creosote plug right at the top of the chimney for about 6-9 inches down. Typically those are easy to fix chuck of 2x4 and pop the plug and go to go again.

Difference in wood type. I'm using soft wood like spruce, red fir and apline fir. So what happens for me is the wood burns extremely hot and you have to choke the stove down to keep from roasting to death in the house. Temps can and have been above 80*F inside the house. So the problem is if you choke the stove low enough to be comfortable the smoke is rolling and creosote is growing in the top of the chimney.

Now Dorkweed is burning hardwood and it much cleaner wood than softwood. Red Fire is some pretty hot wood.

3rd day now around here that's been 70*F+.....................don't need the stove for now!!
