I have play in the dana 70 when you move the yoke back and forth. It measures about an 1/8 inch  worth of movement total is that to much. What is the max for the play.It regularly has metal on the dip stick in the cover. 243k on the clock.

Are you talking a spinning motion or pushing it in/out or up/down? Big difference between all of them!

What he said^^^^^^^ Rotational play aka gear backlash is normal and would be about right any in and out and or side to side  or up and down movement and you have bearings failing or coming loose.

Its rotational play, the in out and side to side is almost zero and no leaks. The pinion seal was replaced and sleeved about 2.5 yrs ago or 15k.

Sounds like you are good to go, that is normal gear lash aka back lash and is about right. What kind of metal is on the magnet? it is normal to have some very fine greasy type material on it as long as there are no large flakes or chunks you are golden.

i have similar rotational play on my dana rear and its normal :D
