Hey guys, something I have noticed with this '05 truck is that when I am towing and trying to take off I get a slight shudder. It doesn't last long maybe until 10 mph, but I do feel it. I was looking around and something that caught my eye was people were saying the shudder is caused by the two piece drive shaft. Anyone heard that? I know that on the second gen trucks a 1/4" spacer for the carrier bearing helped. Do you suppose I may try something like that? If I did, it might be a few months until I would find out if it helps.

You not running a lift 9n your truck I'm going to assume the u joint angles are correct. The only u joint that could get weird is the one right at the pinion with axle wrap it might get some bind. Educated guess.

Oh yea, I got 47" of lift on 17" rims!!:lmao: From what I have read guys have ordered a one piece and even had to shorten them by about 1 1/2". Some even claim it was the best thing they did to their trucks. I'm just wondering if the shudder is the driveline or the transmission. The truck had the shudder when I got it with 88k miles on it and it is still there at 97k miles three months later. I need to stay put more..........

While it is impossible to give you much of a diagnosis without being able to feel the shudder, I can say that you can get some driveshaft-related vibrations with a 2-piece driveshaft, especially when towing. Axle wrap, as well as the different drive line angles come into play any time you put a load into/onto the back of a pickup. I can't say that I deal with it on a very regular basis, though.

You can try some spacers on the carrier bearing. That won't hurt anything. I know Ford had some issues with that back in the early days of the Super Duty body style, and they were shimming the carrier bearing to take care of it.

Hi guys. Lucky me had some one steal no pun intended the drive shaft of my 2006 dodge 3500 4x4 dually. My question is will a drive shaft from a regular 3500 do the job or is the dually drive shaft different.

I experienced launch shudder problems when towing during two different time periods in the life of my '02 truck - approximately 340,000 miles.  Both times I removed the driveshaft and thoroughly cleaned the slip yoke splines  and then applied new grease.  Both times it eliminated the launch shudder.  This is a procedure that never seems to get mentioned when diagnosing launch shudder problems.

Axle wrap happens when getting heavy loads moving and the slip yoke needs to accommodate the axial movement of the driveshaft during those high torque conditions.
