New guy here from Arkansas.  Grew up on the farm and been around heavy equipment and diesel engines my whole life.  I bought a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 about a year ago.  It has the 2004.5 5.9 Cummins.  I started noticing recently that I was getting quite a bit of white smoke from the blow by/breather tube under the truck. I bought the truck with around 130,000 miles on it and it currently has around 180,000 miles on it.  I changed the crank case vent filter on it thinking that might help.  While I expect the motor to have some wear and show some blow by for it being this old and for me hauling with it on a regular basis I am a little surprised at the amount of smoke. I have had equipment that we have rebuilt, and it not have this much smoke coming out of the blow by tube. I have done a lot of reading, and was just wondering if anyone else has seen this before. The smoke is really only noticeable while sitting still, and I don't smell an excessive amount of burnt oil while driving, can only really smell oil while outside the truck with it idling and it still isn't that strong. Truck is not using any oil and it isn't making any oil (such as fuel or water getting in the oil) and not smoke out of the exhaust.  Still have plenty of power and my fuel mileage hasn't changed any either. I would like to try different options before going to the extreme of overhauling it. Any suggestions???

Hello and welcome! You might do better if you post this in the 3rd gen. powertrain section. Probably more follow those sections than the intro. section. I know little about the CR engines, but on the 2nd gen. engines if a vacuum hose has broken or disconnected the pump will basically pressurize the crank case causing extra blow by. I have heard this many times and have witnessed it first hand on my truck. Again, I don't know if your newer engine is like the older ones or not but I would check that first. Also, many will say to take the oil fill cap off and lay it upside down over the hole. If it does not dance around and fall off the blow by is not excessive. Hopefully this helps and gives you a start. Best wishes!
