On a 500 mile trip .... driving with headlights on.

Dash lights slowly faded away.

Next day, dash lights came on with the head lights . .  not quite as bright, but they worked.

Any ideas ?

headlight switch maybe? The dash dimmer is in there but just a guess.

Ok.. I'm going to fully agree with @dripley on this. 

 

Dodge Ram truck, if you use the dimmer part at all like dim 50% brightness or lower the dimmer itself will get extremely hot. I'm going to have to say the rheostat part of the headlight switch is shot and the entire headlight switch will have to be replaced.

Not familiar with the switch . . . 

The dimmer feature wasn't / hasn't been used since I've owned this truck.

Will pull the switch and replace it.
