I'm starting a new post about a previous issue. If this isn't kosher feel free to move it. 

 

So I stated my turbo only builds boost to 22psi,then that's it. It won't build boost until about roughly 2,200 rpm, and is using fuel like crazy. It's not smoking like a freight train, but still using too much fuel. 

The turbo specs are: Turbonetics T3 66/65/.84.

I have stock size injectors in it for now, and I have the tow tune on my quadzilla. 

Is this turbo too big? Or should I suspect a boost leak? 

The turbo also has no wastegate. Just straight out the back to a 5" exhaust all the way back. 

I'm thinking this turbo isn't too big, and I can make pretty good, usable power with it. I know the injectors are kinda tiny for it, but even when I had the 150hp injectors in it, it was still kinda laggy. 

 

Yes...turbo is poorly sized and fuel is laughable.  Sure it will eventually spool up and make a little power...but not usable power like you say.  Can't tow with it, can't hardly drive it in town, drive pressure is up, boost is down, egts are up...just a big slow hot pig that probably can't outrun its own smoke cloud.  I bet it completely sucks to drive.

 

Do some more reading through the forums.  There are many proper setups on here that are tried and tested to be solid combinations for different goals.  A 66 single on stock injectors is not one of them. 

You don't need a turbo till after about +100 HP injectors. Even my +150 HP injectors I could still run my stock HX35W turbo. Quadzilla is the magic in extending the turbo abilities. 

 

Turbo is way too big. 

Well, I guess I'll have to sell it then for an hx35/40 hybrid lol. 

 

In all seriousness, I'm glad I got this info because this truck has never felt right. Not that I have much experience with any other cummins, but she just felt doggy. Still pulls like a raped ape, but just super doggy. Yes it does suck to drive in town too. On the highway, it's not bad.

The 35/40 is old tech...sorry Mike.  There are better options out now.  If you want the biggest turbo you can get with minimal (if any) lag...get a 62/65/12 and put your 150 injectors back in.  You'll get around 40+psi boost, 450-500hp depending on tune, controllable egts and smoke, and it will be a fun and pleasurable daily driver that can tow as well.  It's also a great upper in a compound setup with even bigger injectors once your wallet gets fatter. 

 

I run a 62/65/12 in a compound setup with a 75/96/1.32 underneath it with only 7x.010's (150hp) injectors and it just flat rips up to around 60psi and spools very similar to stock.  It daily drives like a stock truck until you mash it...very enjoyable to daily drive.

True but there is little options for keeping my exhaust brake. My exhaust brake is a requirement for where I drive with mountain grades.

It also seems alot cheaper. Where did you get your turbo at Mike?

One of the members here fave it to me. He tried didn't like it too much. Needed rebuilding bearings were shot.

How do you build one? Or can you just buy them? 

You really need to do some reading on the subject...search "dodgezilla", another name for it.  Mike is only running it because it works with his exhaust brake and it was free.  Otherwise it would not be his first choice.  A hx35 can be converted to a hybrid with a 60mm compressor wheel for $300 and a 12cm housing for $400 and your free labor to disassemble and reassemble it.  At that point you still have have a weaker (skinny) main shaft and a smaller turbo compared to other turbos that will spool the same, provide more air and support more hp...and it's still a used turbo. 

 

If you were given one like Mike was...then by all means go for it.  But if you have to spend money...much better money can be spent on a turbo.

HE351 (60/60/9) and the HX35/40 Hybrid (60/60/12) are the same but the exhaust housing is smaller.

 

I would love to jump for the 62/68/12 that DAP has but I'm short the funds to buy into that one it will work for my Exhaust brake. He has one turbo that will fit my exhaust brake.
