Good morning everyone,

Been gone from the forum for just over a year.  Life got crazy busy (moved from NY to TN recently).

Looking to get back into a Cummins powered truck. I know truck prices are high right now, but my 04 GMC 6.0 is a gas pig and has no power compared to my old 99 24v.   Did some research online, but I'd figured I'd ask the best forum for advice on a 3rd gen.   Which year is better?? Looking to get a 2003-07.5 5.9l.

Looking forward to being apart of the diesel world again.

Tim

  • Aside from the injection event differences the 03–04 also have a stronger piston design, which is often used on 04.5-07 rebuilds to improve the motor. That likely equals out the cost of rebuild.

  • Don’t get in a hurry to buy if you don’t have to. In my experience, low mileage doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been well maintained. Example, my cousin has a 2001 (Cummins) bone stock with 129K miles.

  • An internet search to learn more, and I find a July 14, 2008 post from you advocating this filter, ha ha! I also succeeded in learning more than I ever wanted to 😆

I actually expect used truck prices to peak again starting in April. The new truck supply is still very short and right now were between towing/camping season so prices are down a little.

I believe if you get a 03 or 04 S.O if u get one with a dead motor  extremely easy to get a dead commonrail there everywhere, and then you could put a 6.7 in. + have 0 emissions  you can also 6.7 swap the 4.5-07 hut I hear they need custom tuning and the S.O ARE pretty much straight forward. If you are interested in this route you'll need a 14-18 6.7 cummins as the 5.9 injectors dont fit in 08-12 heads.

I only paid $1,500 for my 06 dually crew cab 4x4. I found a clean one with only 140k miles  that just needed a motor & work. & I betcha you can get a fully loaded 3rd gen for 5k or less probably.
