I hope I am in the right place. Is there no chance of getting gas with out ethenol in it? I mean why am I being forced to use something that is destroying my lawn mower, chainsaw, weedeater, sock in the tank of my 99 pontiac. Yea I went to change my fuel filter, this car has been setting for a long time(6months) and it was full of black stuff with fine crap in it. So I figure I better pull the tank cause it's full of junk. I pull the tank and the sock crumbles in my fingers. The tank was clean so that has to be what it was.A friend of mine is a lawnmower and chainsaw mechanic and say's he has had about 8 chainsaw and weedeater in for warrnnty with piston fried due to water, that the fuel is a magnet for water. Still has come out with there own gas and thats what you must use with new saws and such.

That sounds like oxidation of the actual gasoline rather than the ethanol. When gasoline (not the ethanol in the gasoline) oxidizes it will turn the gasoline to a rum like color with black particulate fallout (gums.) :banghead:If this is happening there are a couple routes you can go. First it to use a product that stabilizes gasoline. I have had limited success with these in the past though. Mind you I am not a big fan of ethanol either and here is why.Ethyl alcohol does attract water with is not good for shelf life. It attracts water like crazy. However when the alcohol itself oxides it turns into acetaldehyde then again into acetic acid. So with the amount of water pulled in by the hydrophyilic alcohol and oxidation eventually breaking it all down into acetic acid, you have successfully created vinegar in your gas tank. :smart:Personally I just drain anything that will not be used. I pour the gas into the tank of my Dakota and when the time comes I want to use the equipment again I go purchase more in smaller quantities.

Like out here there is several station with big banner saying "No Ethanol In Our Fuel"... :rolleyes:What I'm finding out they actually do have it the fuel and sometimes high quanities. Like the local chainsaw shop warned me about the local fuel station claiming this and how many fuel related failure he's had on chainsaws. So like he told me if you want to say safe use a name brand fuel like Chevron but don't use the Mom and Pop places with may or may not have the a banner out there advertising "No Ethanol".Gasoline wise I keep about 20-25 gallons around the house for ATV, lawn mower, generators, etc. But never had a problem with fuel getting funky. I guess because I'll only buy Chevron fuels.

I think it come do to quality of the mixture. Place like Chevron fuel tends to measure out proper amounts of additives. Where Mom and pop fuels (generic) tend to be a bit more sloppy about it maybe adding more ethanol to it hence why its cheaper.
