Hey guys. I'm at my uncles this weekend and he says he had a programmer that changes tire sizes. I have been wanting to do that for a bit so I said sure. I didn't even think it would try to tune my truck also. I have my comp box in the truck as well. I set the tire size and went for a drive. It felt like the the timing was all over the place!!!! I turned the comp off and it seemed to smoothen out but I have a serious power loss now. I tried to get back in with the other programmer to erase all its settings and now it won't recognize the truck. It says that it's not the original vehicle. This programmer is a smart chips "micro max" tuner. Obd II plug in. I have to drive 200 miles tonight!!! Any have an idea??? Thank you!!

Well none of the codes came back so I think they were just from whenever the shop had everything tore down. Must have had the key on or something.

Did not take the time to look up the codes, but shooting from the hips, I could only think of timing being affected by the electronics.

So I went into the cummins shop and I them reflash the ECM. Apparently the dodge dealer did the PCM and not the ECM. Everything seems to be back to normal. Got the comp hooked back up and everything is well.

  • 9 months later...

They flashed the Power Control Module, ie "fuse box" and not the ECM?? They should know that the ECM would be in control of timing and such. I would be leary of that dealer. :cookoo:

Pcm is not the fuse box, the pcm controls trans, cruise, and all the non engine components

Sorry I did not realize this was on an 01 model. My PCM is attached to outside of my fuse box which I had to replace (fuse box) due to electrical issues with my AC unit. Yes that is correct, it does not deal with Engine Components so why would they mess with it knowing the ECM controls the engine components’ that he was having issues with? PCM is usually reprogrammed if it was coming from a different VIN that may not have all the electrical accessories’ and components’ from the previous truck. Now if the Edge did interface with the PCM then I could see it causing an issue but others with more experience with that could elaborate on that further. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thx

I dont know of any tuner/programmer that does anything with the PCM unless it has trans tunes. Later on the that dealership tried explaining to me that the ECM and PCM are one unit on these trucks. They also very specifically told me that I have no idea what I am talking about when I tried to tell them they are different units. They were "surprised I even knew how to drive a cummins" with "how much I knew about it". Worst experience with a stealership EVER.

What a bunch of idiots... the ECM is on the engine, the PCM is on the firewall. Point that out to those book-learned fools next time.

I tried to!!! Thats when they said they coudnt believe people like me are allowed to buy trucks like this  :banghead:

That is as bad as a dealership that told me "The reason your tie rods are worn out at 36k miles is because this is not a highway car. It is an in town car". I also overheard the service adviser tell another couple "Your engine has nylon impregnated pistons. It is designed to use oil". Honest that is what was said.

Wow im glad when i worked at the dealer we never bullshitted anybody. There is no reason to

and what is the name of this dealership? so i never go there.

I don't want to specify the name or place this dealership is in public. No need for publicly bashing businesses. I can PM you about it if you want.

...you know, I was at my local NAPA buying parts one time, she noticed I had a diesel truck. So she asks me, "Do you want to buy some exhaust fluid? Its on sale right now, for a really great price!"

I retort, "What? Yea, lady and I think I need a bottle of blinker fluid, too!"

She says, "No, really, look!"

...and thats when I found out that there REALLY was exhaust fluid! Who woulda thunk!

..it seemed pretty darn funny to me at the time! So I had to have her explain to me how it worked. Wow...

Well I had another bad experience with the dealership. Went down to get the fast idle software flashed and they couldnt do it. I even printed out the tsb paperwork that is in the articles section for them!!! Their excuse was manual transmission trucks can not be flashed with this software because their tool wont do it. I am just going to rent the smarty and do it myself :banghead: :spank:

Last time I will ever be going to the dealer!!!!

This was a different dealership than the last one by the way...

On the 3rd gens that is true but I dont see why that would be the case on the second gens. The only way they couldnt do it is if chrysler got rid of the feature in the manual trans software. If i remember right the downloads were vin specific.

So any advice on using a smarty? I havent ever gotten my hands on one but I am sure it is pretty straight forward. Anything to watch out for loading it on top of the Comp? I want to have a little fun with it while I have it :burnout::burnout2::whistle2:

Load a tune, screw off for awhile, and then return to stock. High idle/3 cylinder idle will be enabled

Edited by mopartechnician

Wish I could get my 03 manual high idle to work but I hear it was not programmed in the ECM and the dealer said it cant be done.

I tried to do the ground trick with no luck.

OP, you will have fun with the Smarty.

I need to get me a smarty. Holy crap that thing woke the truck up. I just had it on the preset level 4 and stacked with the comp it felt like it had twice as much low end torque.
