Posted May 17, 201411 yr New camper 31.5 BHTS by Jayco. Weights from CAT scale: Steer axle 4720 Drive axle 8940 Trailer axle 4260 Gross combined 17920 Seems a little heavy. What do you guys think?
May 17, 201411 yr Owner Something seems off. What kind of hitch bumper pull or 5th wheel? Are you dual rear axle or single?
May 17, 201411 yr Looks to me like the fwd trailer axle was on the scale with the truck. GCW seems legit ( or close), but the truck and trailer axle weights are off.
May 17, 201411 yr Author Something seems off. What kind of hitch bumper pull or 5th wheel? Are you dual rear axle or single? Fifth wheel with dual axles. I wonder if the weights are wrong due to axle placement compared to big rigs. This was a CAT scale at a truck stop. Edited May 17, 201411 yr by riddle family
May 17, 201411 yr Author Here it is all hooked up last night. I see that I mssed the pictures originally. Edited May 20, 201411 yr by riddle family
May 21, 201411 yr Author It is a little but this model of Jayco doesn't have adjustable suspension to level out. Will probably have to do a spacer or axle flip.
May 21, 201411 yr Looks to me like you could drop the pin some but it is difficult to tell. How much clearance do you have between the box and trailer?
May 21, 201411 yr Author Not sure, it was late when I got home. I. Am going to check that this Friday before we head out to the mountains.
May 21, 201411 yr Looks to me like you could drop the pin some but it is difficult to tell. How much clearance do you have between the box and trailer? I agree, looks like 9" or so in the photos but they can be deceiving.
May 27, 201411 yr Author When we were leaving campground found a level spot to see how unlevel camper was in tow position. My phone level said it was 1 degree from front to back. Don't know why it looks so unlevel?
May 27, 201411 yr Author The space betweent the truck and fifth is about 8" up front and around 7 at the end fo the bed of the truck.
May 27, 201411 yr Author I can lower my the hitch of the truck one set of holes which equals to about 1".
May 27, 201411 yr Author If I did the math correctly 1° will give just under 7" of rise over 30'. You are close it is actually 6.29".
May 27, 201411 yr That sounds right. I used 33', and didn't think about it until after I posted. 6" of difference is a lot and easily noticeable.
May 27, 201411 yr Author I guess the question boils down if I lower the hitch will it now ride to low in front and add more weight to the truck? The camper pulled fine as is and a little weight toward the rear is better to relieve pin weight on the front.
May 27, 201411 yr I found that with my camper any amount of height away from level, up or down, increased the tongue weight. I would assume that to the true on pin weight as well.
May 27, 201411 yr Owner You want to tow at nearly prefect level. This will equalize the weight across the tires of the axles and wear tires evenly. I tend to agree about tongue weight it seems either too low or too high it feel heavy. But can't comment on pin weight being the trailer is design differently.
