98.5 3500 4x4 auto stock 113,00mi

Dealer recall at 12k mi  to reprogram for nox emmisions  ( recall no 8001 ) cut fuel mi to 5 loaded 12 empty and easy. after 2 reflash dodge said thats normal.

 

 

To shorten a very long story with the great help of Bluechip diesel and the jumper wire trick they and i don't think its the vp44. Followed there detailed and very helpful diagnostic section plus some others.

 

Problems started with oil press gauge showing 60 with out engine running. Changed it, same thing. Next intermittent dead pedal, rest apps no change. next, intermittent dead tach- dead petal- ck eng light- abs light and brake light. Several codes, cleared computer with apps reset procedure more than once. Among other codes 0336 and 0222 came up every time. Changed crank sensor and apps, no change. Problems grew into VERY little power until op temp above 140. After up to temp still have all other issues, dead pedal-christmas lights on in the dash- dead tach and oil press 60 running or not.

Started checking codes every time driven to learn pattern of my gremlin. Problems grew to cold start -die- wait 2 min. start - die each time it will run a little longer, after 5 -10 cycles it will run. NO power until warm. During start-die cycles i must wait about. 2 min each time with key OFF.  If the key is left on it will not reset. If i don't wait long enough, no start, no fuel pump and no wait to start light.  Cold mornings won't start at all if not plugged in. when in start die mode using Bluechips jumper trick it will start and stay running for hours even cold. newest symptom when warm, a couple of hard starts and one no start. Cycled the key a few times to get wait to start light, then started.

 

 

Code list , In order over 1 month but only being driven 5-6 times. X denotes multiples of same code.

0336and 0222 Every time (even if you don't start , when i erase codes ck eng. light just flashes off then back on with these codes)

Checked every plug i can find. Checked harness every where it can be seen touched or wiggled. Removed ecm to ck for corrosion, plug condition etc. Installed ground wires on vp44, ecm and ecu on the fire wall.

 

Local shops and dealers are no help. ( dealer said change every thing including lift pump and harness. AND would not give quote)

 

I have tried all the normal things, Cant afford to throw money at it. Please help.

The wild oil pressure reading tend to lead down the ECM path. But the common thing like a whole list of lo or hi volt codes. Typically the coolant gauge goes full swing and trips the check engine light and check gage light. Random revving of the engine and dead pedal.

I would first start by checking all the plugs on the ECM and the VP for any corrosion. Make sure all the pins are clean and in place. Then put some die-electric grease on all plugs and reseat them AT LEAST THREE TIMES. In other words, put the plug on and make sure it is seated allthe way, then pull the plug and do it again and again. That would make sure you have clean connections. You may even wantto do that to the PCM plugs plus the large one that is on the firewall. When you put the plugs back on make sure all the wires are in the proper depth in the plugs.

P0216 code is going to be a wear issue code. The timing piston is most likely wore out and seized up. It could be low fuel pressure issues too but most of the time is the wear issue.

 

While most of the time that is a true statement, I don't remember who it was, but a low fuel pressure caused his P0216. Once he got pressure back the code didn't come back. Maybe he just caught it? I dunno......

thank you mopar1973man.  Temp gauge works no swings or jumps. no revving.  Do you or any one know where or who knows how to troubleshoot a haunted ecm or pcm. bluechip said you might could help.

Tell him "thanks"... But as for odd behaviour I would have to say try taking it to a Dodge Dealer and having the ECM reflashed. Maybe during the flash process the DRBIII tool might sense something or there is a checksum that might not be right. I work off a 2 smoking gun rule. I need two separate test that show a failure before I would commit to replacement. Right now we really don't have much. The only thing I could suggest is swapping ECM's with a friend and see if the problem goes away.

I have a different problem with the oil pressure gauge.  I had no oil pressure, replaced the sending unit (Cummins part)

and still no movement on the gauge, so maybe the problem is in the wiring harness?

On our truck the oil pressure sender is wired to the ECM. So verify the ECM to the sender wiring. Now beyond that the oil pressure data is sent over the CCD network to the cluster. Since the rest of the cluster is working I know its not the CCD network.

 

Oil Pressure Sensor => ECM -> [CCD Network] -> Instrument Cluster

Mike, Just out of curiosity if the wires are bad to the ECU how do you remove/replace wires from the oil sensor?.  These are Molex connectors, and aren't easy to retrofit from the harness going to the engine.   Should I get a used harness and try to splice a good section ?
