February 3, 201510 yr What are you trying to test? About the only test I know of with the turbo on the truck is see if you can make the compressor wheel touch the sides. If it does it failed......
February 3, 201510 yr What MnTom said, and you would need to remove the turbo from the manifold to completely check it out. To see if the waste gate is frozen, disconnect the line on the compressor housing and blow compressed air in it to see if the actuator moves. Fill out you signature so we know what you're working with, HY35? HX35?

Thank you for the waste gate testing info. MnTom, I know very little about Turbo's except every one wants to change them for whatever reason. I just want to know that what I have is working well. 5.9 24v 5 speed stick 4x4 2002k miles. I am the second owner and aquired this truck eleven years ago with 198k. I don't drive it much unless I'm hauling hay or cattle. Thank you, Kerley
February 3, 201510 yr The old school methods of shaft play take effect here. You check for excessive side to side and in and out play. If it is excessive, they will tear it down and rebuild it. I would take it to a diesel shop and let them feel the play and see what they think. Aside from that, there really isn't a way to test them as most shops don't have turbo flow benches. They usually just tear it down, clean it up, put in new journal bushings, balance it, and there you have it.

February 5, 201510 yr Kerley what year is your truck? Usually the rule of thumb is that the manual trucks had the HX35 turbo and those turbos are pretty bullet proof
February 5, 201510 yr Author mulcher812 My Dodge Ram 1998.5, 24v 4x4, 5 speed stick. The problem I believe I may be having is when I am driving and accelerate weather loaded or empty, pulling a trailer or not, I never feel or hear the Turbo kick in, it just does not sing [wistle] so I just assume there is a problem. I installed the AutoMeter fp guage eight years ago and have 22p at idle, 20p +- while driving and 18+ WOT. I bought new AutoMeter Boost and Pyrometer guages that will be installed this week. I also bought a Boost tester from ebay. [bought my AutoMeter guages from a vendor not ebay]. Also last year I installed a BHAF from Donaldson with a Heat Shield so there is plenty of clean air available for power. Will the Boost guage inform me when the Turbo is working ? Also I have fuel guage problems which will be solved by a Vulcan Liberty asap. Edited February 5, 201510 yr by kerley
February 5, 201510 yr Get that boost guage installed and see what kind of boost it will build, on a stock truck with a working waste gate you should build about 18-20 psi on a hard WOT pull.
