2003, 2004, 2005 or 2006 Dodge
Thanks for the input everyone. I don't need to buy right away, just would like to get back into a Cummins powered truck and get good fuel mileage again. I've looked into the 4th gen trucks, but the price for a 4th gen truck is just outside of my budget. I may hold off for a couple of months to see if prices start to come down. Knowing my luck I'll buy a truck and prices will come down haha. I am not against a high mileage truck, just figure low mileage may mean less repairs/replacing parts after initial purchase. Tim

Truck would be a daily and a camper hauler when going on vacation. I'd like to get a manual truck, but they are hard to find and not have 300k miles. I'd like to find a truck less than 200k miles at a reasonable price (I know some what a needle in hay stack in today's market). I hope to start really looking in the next month as I am still in transition with moving. Tim

Thanks again Moparman. Obviously I am new to CR engines and have not fully researched them. That's why I asked here to get any input or any years to stay away from. I'll keep the information on hand regarding replacing injectors if they have never been done before. Tim

I've heard lots about the 5.9l common rail and how the motors can be ruined due to cylinder wash. Just wondering if the later years 5.9l CRs are better than the earlier ones. I'm looking for a truck with obviously as low mileage I can find that is not way overpriced. I've found a few trucks around 180k-220k miles for $20k+. High mileage does not scare me, I know it's a matter of not if, but when to replace fueling parts and the added cost of CR fueling components. I know with the market I'm going to pay more, but have to keep it in budget. I'd like to find a truck that is a keeper for a long time (moving south I am looking forward to missing all the rust that NY winters bring) Glad to be back on the forum! Tim

Thanks Moparman for the reply! If love to 18mpg again, my 6.0 gmc gets 13 if it's unloaded and I'm light on the pedal. Any years to stay away from or are all the 5.9l common rails good regarding reliability? Not looking for crazy power, but something that gets better than 6mpg towing our camper during vacations. Tim

2003, 2004, 2005 or 2006 Dodge
Good morning everyone, Been gone from the forum for just over a year. Life got crazy busy (moved from NY to TN recently). Looking to get back into a Cummins powered truck. I know truck prices are high right now, but my 04 GMC 6.0 is a gas pig and has no power compared to my old 99 24v. Did some research online, but I'd figured I'd ask the best forum for advice on a 3rd gen. Which year is better?? Looking to get a 2003-07.5 5.9l. Looking forward to being apart of the diesel world again. Tim

47re issue
Good day everyone, I have decided to sell the 2nd gen. It has more issues than the trans and I do not want to dump any more funds into the truck. I am in the process to putting it back to stock and will list it in the coming week. I'll get back into the diesel game in a few years once kidos are out of bulky car seats. Thanks, Tim

47re issue
Evan, Trust me I love my 1999, but with 3 kids under 4 who are still in bulky car seats it gets tight in the cab with a family of 5. It is not a confirmed decision to sell it. I may hang on to it and slowly save the funds to rebuild/replace transmission and possibly rebuild the 24v or swap a 12v or common rail in it (I have a source for both engines). I have a place to store truck to work on it if I choose to keep it. Tim

47re issue
Good evening everyone, After some thought on the transmission issue. I have decided to step away from the diesel game and sell my 1999. I really do not have a need for a diesel at this time in life. I am sure I will return to the Cummins platform once funds allow to keep up with the maintenance and repairs that come with diesel truck ownership. I will still be an active member of the forum as much as I can as this is an awesome resource for the Cummins platform. Thanks, Tim

Unfortunately there are no codes.

47re issue
It is lazy. I can manually down shift to 2nd and then to drive and it when shift into 3rd but no 1st at all. When in drive it will shift from 2-3 like normal but then slide into o/d. I feel like it may be a bigger issue than linkage. Maybe time to upgrade to a bigger truck that fits family of 5 better. Tim

47re issue
I dont know if it is slipping, I've never experienced transmission slip before. You have to get truck to 2k rpm before it will start moving. All I did this past weekend was replace the 2 sensors, changed the 3-4 accumulator spring adjust bands per manual and filter change. I am at the point where am not sure it's worth to sink anymore money in truck. Tim

47re issue
Hello all, This year is not a good year for my 24v. I have been having some issues with the 47re in the truck. It would sometimes seem like it would skip 1st gear so this past weekend I changed out the Gov sensor and transducer, but now I have no 1st gear even if shifted manually. I adjusted both bands to spec and trans seems to just glide into other gears. The atf was dark and had dark sludge on the magnet, but nothing excessive. Have the clutches burnt out? I'm at the point I may trade it in on a 2008 Ram 2500 with 6.7 and g56.. What do you guys think? Tim

Odd idle
Yeah sounds the same. I have not been able to work on truck yet. Life got in the way. Hopefully this weekend.
-
Odd idle
I have only around 6300 miles on injectors, but they could of been bad from the beginning. I am going to crack the lines in the next couple days and see if noise goes away.

Odd idle
Thanks Ill give it a try hopefully tomorrow or monday evening. I have my old injectors, I may send them out to DAP and get rebuilt as a back up set. Tim

Odd idle
Good afternoon everyone, Got a few questions. Last year April 2019 I installed DAP 100hp injectors and noticed what I thought maybe an odd low knocking noise at idle. My truck is the only cummins diesel I've owned and I'm no pro at knowing diesels. As the year went on the sound seems to have gotten more noticeable. Below are two videos. Do you guys think it's an injector knock or something worse? Engine load per Quadzilla is around 10% at idle with rpms around 800. Fuel pressure is steady at 15-16psi. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Tim

Bucking at 40 to 50mph
Mine definitely was because of this it is now a slightly noticeable shutter. Just hate that trans started to act up. Always something Tim

Bucking at 40 to 50mph
When my truck bucked it would want to shake truck apart. Spilled many coffees due to it. Since I added fuel down low it is slightly noticeable now. Although trans does not like wot pulls. I noticed it doesnt always start in 1st. I will be ordering updated sensors after Christmas. Hopefully dont need a trans rebuild bc truck would be put on back burner for while as funds wont allow a trans rebuild at moment. Tim

Bucking at 40 to 50mph
The adjustments I made in the fuel curve helped. The bucking is still there, but not as bad, but truck has way more power off the line than it has before. Thanks guys for your help. Going to add a little more fuel down low and hopefully get bucking to go away for good. I did some wot pulls but couldn't tell if it was smoke from exhaust or salt dust being kicked up from road. I'll try some more wot pulls in coming days. Tim

Bucking at 40 to 50mph
I tend to drive with a light foot. I dont think I have ever gone WOT from a stop. I do get a slight puff/haze of smoke when in O/D and I put foot into it, but nothing crazy. I'll give it a go tonight after work. Tim

Bucking at 40 to 50mph
I changed the fuel sliders to: 0psi: 84 1-3psi: 85 4-5psi: 86 Then rest are untouched. The bucking seemed to not be as bad, but still bucked in O/D with low boost. I am going to change the entire fuel map to start at 90 at 0spi and see what happens. If it does not clear up, I may send box out as this is a recent issue. Tim
