  1. Before replacing the VP44 and lift pump, the error codes were 1693,0336 and 0216. We replaced the crank sensor. Not showing any codes now. when it first started dying, the truck would start and run perfect and die when I let off the accelerator. The last time it happened, when it finally started, it had a heavy miss, spitting and stuttering with lots of black smoke. Had to tow it to the shop to put the new pump in. Still haven't installed the fuel pressure gauge, putting one in tonight. --- Update to the previous post... The parts place sent a 15 psi gauge because they didn't have a 30 psi. That's just my luck. We reset the APPS, primed it with the key several times and it seemed to run smoother for a while. In the end, it would idle rougher and die. It is also somewhat hard to start The mechanic thinks an injector may be screwed up and flooding a cylinder. Any ideas about this? My original post was wrong about the new pump, it was actually dying when the accelerator was released. Now, after priming the lift pump, it will idle a couple of minutes before dying. Still no codes with a good scanner.
  2. I just had the VP44 and the lift pump on my 98.5 Dodge replaced. At idle, the engine surges from 600 to 800 rpm and wants to die when the accelerator is pressed. The injectors have been bled once, the pump has been primed with the key trick once or twice and I am not sure if the APPS reset has been done. A friend is doing the actual work, he is a heavy equipment diesel mechanic and has never worked on a Dodge. I do trust his work mechanically. Am I right in thinking we need to reset the APPS, prime it a half dozen times and bleed it one more time? It's kind of funny, I have been reading on here for several years now and never had a reason to post. My old 92 12V just never broke down and I'm not smart enough to give a competent answer about these 24V's. I've been in deep do... every since my wife decided I needed a better truck and bought this piece of junk without talking to me. I would appreciate any suggestions you have. I do believe we're on the right track.:pray:There are no codes showing now that the pump has been replaced.Russ is probably the only one who remembers Tudor the Turtle.
  3. I don't believe there is a way to get off this train so we just have to ride it to the end of the line. I am trying to provide for and prepare my grandchildren and then pray for the best.
  4. I have used 3 tanks of fuel and I am now getting 18 mpg. (don't know why)keeping the rpm under 2K.Blame the winter fuel for not getting back to 19mpg.I'm happy now!!!!
  5. Mopar- checked out CF last night and thought I had wandered into a Duke basketball forum. They were trash-talking and wanting to fight. Glad that doesn't go on here. Might be why you have older people here.
  6. Has anyone ever removed the lift on a truck and returned it to its original height.I'm thinking about doing mine this summer.Don't know anything about lifts, but I assume I would need original springs, u-bolts, etc. to go back.
  7. Mopar- Haven't done a valve job yet. On the list after layoff.K&N filter was cleaned in Aug. Just checked it , looks ok.IAT is coming out at the first chance.I think I am going to synthetic in everything this summer. Thanks for all the help.
  8. Noticed your avatar--looks like a chinook.I assume you are now or recent military. If so, you have my respect and admiration.Eon's ago, I served in a CH-46 squadron(HMM-263)Back to your post: I just drained and refilled with synthetic fluid. Most of the squealing went away.
  9. It's scary to see how young most of you are.I'm pushing 63.Going to retire at the next layoff.Thinking about putting a small dumpbed on the 92.(will keep me occupied)
  10. I have been getting logged out when I try to post so I hope this works.WOT pressure -11 @2000rpmRefueled at 4 different stationsmileage dropped when the crank sensor started malfunctioning in Aug and has stayed down. Brakes were just inspected 3 days ago. good shape.New fuel filter in Aug. had 3-4000 mi on it when the crank sensor went out.Mopar; I really appreciate everybodys help. A 12V I can handle, these 24V's are something else.
  11. No codes at AutoZone. Fuel pressure about 16. Changed fuel filter in Aug.(12000 mi. ago) Mileage dropped at the next fill-up after I started having problems.
  12. In Sept. I started having problems in my 98.5 with the torque converter at about 40 mph, tack dying, and sometimes no start every time. Milage dropped from 19 to 16. Dorkweed? said it was the crank position sensor. I was working 6 12's and driving 150 miles to work. I drove it until mid Dec. when I had time to fix it. It drives like a charm now, check engine light is off. Milage is still at 16. I think I need some more advice on the mpg.
  13. MoPar, I think you were right about the fuel leak. The Rubber to steel connector was about half off. I think i fixed it this time Check engine light is off. Running good. Fuel pressure gauge on order.I am using 2 stroke and have picked up almost 3 mpg(20.2 mpg). I used cheap corn oil in my 92 For years. Thanks for the help.

If that picture doesn't make the cover , somebody at the magazine has it in for you. Absolutely marvelous picture.I lost "Bubba" awhile back at age 16. We hunted to the very end.
  15. Thanks for the information. Working on the fuel guage. I have a 92 12v with 750,000 on it. Runs like a top but looks like Sanford and sons. Don't know much about these 24v engines. Will try what you suggested. When I crank the 98.5, it will either start imediately(2-3 sec max) or not fire at all(rattles hard and loud, and sounds like a John Deere that has run out of fuel). Come back in 5 min. and it might start. Havn't tried extended cranking of the starter(10 sec.at the most ) One positive: Truck is running much better from all the stuff i have tried. It has more power, shifts better and just feels better. The tack is rock steady. MoPar, it's nice to have people that can be trusted about their information. Sure do appreciate it. Love your area also,it sure is beautyful.
  16. I have a 98.5 auto, stock 24v with no start condition last week. Wasn't getting fuel but started after about 20 min. I changed fuel, air and oil filters and primed it. Started fine but no start next time. 50/50 start/no start over the next week. If the lift pump would prime by bumping the starter, the truck would start every time. Did a lot of stuff suggested on here and other places with no luck. Finally pulled no 9 fuse and ASE ? relay and cleaned bayonets Truck has been starting and running perfect the last 4 days. Any ideas?
