Fueling "up the spout?"

Is there any harm in fueling "up the spout"... above the other opening inside the filler neck? Occasionally, I have done this when I got a good price & did not want to give the highway bandits any more than I had to. If this is not a good idea, I'll not do this again. A comment on another thread got me thinking...Russ

I've seen a couple other guys at pumps getting every drop they can in too. I think it needs room to expand since the fuel is returned to the tank and all. Might be hard on some gaskets/o-rings.

Like myself with the Drawstraw kit... Well the orignal O-ring doesn't like being full right to the top with fuel (Leakage). So I tend not to fill dead to the top. But if you do make sure you drive a good distance to use a good amount off. Back when I was in the Fire Dept a guy stopped in town and loaded up plum full (in the filler neck) left the gas station and parked about 200 yards away. Walk to a restraunt for a bite. Well by that time the summer heat was pushing fuel out of the tank and we were called to HAZMAT spill. So the owner got a hefty fine for this one and not going to do that twice...

Thanks for the tip guys. I've not had any issues with leakage or I would not have ever done it. Fuel coming from underground tanks will be cool... so except in cold weather, we should expect some expansion. It's 10 miles home from the nearest station a highway truck stop that's a PITA since they don't accept pay at the pump & it's a hike to the fuel desk. Twice that from those I prefer to use. So I'm down a gallon before I get home. Still, it doesn't seem to make sense to coax in the last gallon or 2. And you're right that any seepage at the seals could dump it on the ground. Russ

I tend to fill mine to the rim. I fill up and the border and typically pay about a $.30/L less. In other words about $20+/per fill up! I do have another 30min drive home after fill up so not too worried about spillage out the vent. I did experience that once though.
