Testing Alternator for noise

If I tested my alternator correctly... touching the positive probe of my multimeter to the big black wire on back of alternator and negative probe to the negative post of the battery.. with my multimeter set to 2000mV... I'm getting a reading of 1. Does not fluctuate or anything. Is this okay or am I doing it wrong?

Is it set to AC or DC?

I set it to the 2000mV setting at the 9 o'clock position on my meter.. That's what I read in a thread on CF.

There has got to be an option to switch between AC and DC.  I have one at home that switches by me hitting a button.

The 2 lined solid and dot V section measurement is DC.  The wavey V is the AC.  I doubt that multimeter can read AC volts as low as you need to test.

It does auto ranging etc so it is nice to use.  Seems to about %50 of the cost a fluke with the same features.  The IR proves useful when trying to sort issues like misfire etc.
